We Need To Base Our Understanding of Reality Upon Reality, Not Manipulation.

Everything You Think You Know About Disease Is Likely Wrong....
In order to understand the world around us as the truth about it is emerging from a 100+ year slumber, it’s going to be important to challenge ideas that have absolutely zero basis in reality.

I will start off by saying that we have been duped - ALL OF US.

A few years ago i used to do my own #research, did proteomic analysis of mouse brain, was searching for molecules which are important for neuroplasticity and published those data. 👇🏻 but today … 🧵

After two Sars-Cov-2 infections, i am a #longcovid sufferer and have to take care on my own brain because #brainfog and #Dysautonomia #pots #fatigue #PEM

As a #scientist i teached bachelor students in lectutes and in a practical way during experiments,

1/6 I think that a #DeSci economy that covers all aspects of #academia in one ecosystem (#publications, #peerreview, and #funding) is more valuable and more likely to succeed in the long run than a project that covers only one or two of these aspects. Why? ...
2/6 Because of #networkeffects. All three parts of academia co-depend and influence each other. There are positive network externalities to solving problems in publishing, peer review, and funding to other parts of #academia. ...
3/6 And if such an integrated #DeSci solution helps to reward #scientists more fairly, solve their #funding problems, and raise the standards of #peerreview and #publications, every #scientist would want to be a part of it. ...

On this #InternationalDayOfScientificCulture, let's talk about a different aspect of #science & #cuture:

"The cultural expectation(s) of what it means to be a #scientist, and why we need to question it!"

A thread 🧵 1/ Image
In the light of the recent student deaths in multiple educational institutions across #India, I've been informally chatting with some students and faculty, in a bid to try and understand what went (and perhaps continues to be going) wrong!

In addition to all the pertinent personal, institutional & systemic factors brought forth by many of my friends and colleagues, I want to try and reflect on one factor in particular:

"What does it mean to be a 'scientist' in today's world?"

Finally saw @PictureaSciFilm, very powerful film we should all see. Thanks @UBC for the screenings. Reflecting on all the little "below the iceberg tip" harassment I experienced as a student, esp. during field work, field courses & conferences... /n happiest, most formative moments as a #scientist were in the field. Also my lowest moments of unwanted touches & demeaning or objectifying moments from male colleagues, both peers and my seniors. Hard to say this...most happened @BamfieldMSC 2/n
...that last tweet was very hard to send. I adore @BamfieldMSC; I am one of their faculty champions at UBC, I promote the courses incessantly to my students. I know a lot has changed but in their recent spirit of "looking back" tweets, I want to share two moments there... 3/n

I loved being in the hiring process for our scientist position!, but I was concerned at the number of poorly written CVs and resumes that were sent through to us. So I thought I'd share a few quick pointers for I would consider a good application: 1/n #scientist #phdchat
1. The job title was "Scientist PCR" therefore I shouldn't need to search the document for the word PCR. Even if the candidate doesn't have tons of exp, it still helps to list exactly what you did. eg. what PCR extraction kit, DNA or RNA? sample types, qPCR, qRT-PCR, etc 2/n
1. continued. What platforms? Biorad, Thermofisher? experience with automated systems or manual extraction? experience with PCR optimisation? troubleshooting? contamination control? interpretation of PCR results? 3/n

In reality, the trademark should be property of those that created the brand. Namely, We Mean Business in partnership with the #UN & partner, World Economic Forum.

Callum Grieve: We Mean Business architect. Thunberg handler. #Branding expert.…
We Mean Business: 1,176 corporations rep. 24.8 trillion market cap.

Aside from how ridiculous it is to feign disapproval that a #brand created by/serving the most powerful institutions/ corporations on the planet is being misused, I want to touch upon a couple of things.
Jan 29 2020, GT: "I apologize to anyone who has been contacted - and even misled - by this kind of behavior."

Sep 25 2019, GT: " clothes, my behaviour and my differences. They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory."

-A interview of a antisemitisem scientist-

"In polls, many #Germans are annoyed by the thematization of the #Holocaust: One third is annoyed that the crimes committed against the #Jews are still held up today. And 41 percent think that #Jews talk about it too often ..."
The feeling of being held up is apparently present in many, they feel attacked. It is quite paradoxical: Although in surveys almost 90 percent say that belonging to #Germany is the knowledge of the history of National Socialism. Nevertheless, especially the #youth find today:
My #grandfather was already no longer involved, at some point is also good times. Interestingly, this is not just a #German phenomenon, but in the whole of #Europe, such as in #Poland and #Hungary, but also in #Spain or the #UnitedKingdom.

1/ Woo! My monster paper with Matt Wilson, "Locomotor and Hippocampal Processing Converge in the Lateral Septum" was just released in @CurrentBiology!! Not only that, but I made a comic to describe my findings!!…
2/ We used tetrodes to record from CA1 hippocampus and dorsolateral lateral septum, an area innervated by all CA regions of the hippocampus and many regions involved in "motivational" behavior
3/ Some cells in the LS were linearly modulated by the animal's running speed (could be positively or negatively modulated!) and/or by the animal's acceleration (also could be positively or negatively modulated!)
