So I promised some cold hard truths to writers about submitting scripts to execs. Buckle up, this is gonna be bumpy. #scriptchat

The first thing to say is that they assume it’s going to be shit. Sad isn’t it? The fact is that most scripts are. Even the packaged* ones.
*packaged meaning with producer, director, cast.

When I say “shit” I mean creatively: plodding, too long, badly structured, don’t have payoff, bad characters etc

But also may be badly packaged: miscast, budget too high etc

Muddy genre, no audience**

Or here’s the clincher..
They may not be to that person or company’s MO. eg you’re sending a horror script to a company who does award winning dramas. 10 pages in and you know you’re gonna pass so you’re already wasting that person’s time.

Bearing in mind this is all at a professional level here.

(1) A quick (unsolcited) #Thread about a mistake I see some new/unpublished/undiscovered talent make on social media: announcing and hyping projects that never get made. We know how exiciting it can be to find a "killer" idea and how thrilling it is to begin working on it. #write
(2) We writers often get ahead of ourselves, posting pages, paragraphs, story clips, partial artwork, screenshots, praise from family/friends/colleagues - all for unfinished and/or underdeveloped projects that clearly need more time to grow and become a "thing." #writerslife
(3) The scant validation we receive for this unfinished masterpiece spreads like a raging virus and overtakes the time and effort needed to get the project done. We begin to sell the IDEA of the project instead of turning the IDEA into a PRODUCT. I've seen this happen a lot.

Attending a screenplay webinar with director and screenwriter of Zombieland tonight. Not sure if I’ll have a chance but anyone have a (sincere) question you’re dying to ask ‘em?
Zombieland was originally going to be tv series (pre walking dead, when there were no zombie shows), but after that didn’t work at CBS it became very appealing to film studio so they worked into a feature. Sequel they wrote right after. Tried pilot again.
The women characters came about when wanting people with survival instincts which made them think of con artists being survivors.
Also some of Woody’s best lines we’re in script but “Thank God for rednecks” was Harrelson improvisation.
