Dear @GavinNewsom I sit here realizing that you are spending every day, fighting to keep your job, and the career you’ve built. You are trying to make the case that you should keep your job, and that’s a pretty terrible feeling. 1/
The irony is not lost on me that in early 2020, I was one of thousands of California freelancers, calling your office and the offices of my assembly person and senator, asking for help to keep my own livelihood, one I’d worked to build over a period of years, harmed by #AB5 2/
I called daily, wrote letters, took meetings with lawmakers explaining my #smallbusiness And while I got some sympathetic listening, there was no action taken to help professionals like myself from being cast aside. Frustrating as heck. 3/

New draft out, Elena and I demonstrate that in 🇮🇹 #selfemployed organizing and bargaining are long-standing, embedded in collective agreements, and acknowledged by the law: ssrn.com/abstract=38237… forthcoming in @sanjuktampaul, McCrystal & @ewanmcg, “Labor in #CompetitionLaw” CUP
The chapter’s overarching goal is to understand whether and to what extent concerted wage fixing practices are granted a special (express or implied) immunity at the domestic level.
Addressing this issue is vital to unravel the nature and scope of #antitrust labour exemptions...
A topic that is gaining attention at a time when numerous non-standard workers are unreasonably left under- or un-protected due to legal uncertainties and loopholes resulting in their exclusion from the scope of application of several social measures. See: socialeurope.eu/collective-voi…

Thread by @JessicaMeigs (THANK YOU THANK YOU!)

➡️ Hey #entrepreneurs, #TwitterMarketing, and ANYONE who is #selfemployed

‼️EVERYONE should know this information that's being buried in the news cycle:

‼️The PRO Act, or HR 842‼️👎

...…📵🔊 threadreaderapp.com/thread/1366805…
The voting date is scheduled for 03/08! (aka THIS Monday!)

🚨Remember the heavily OPPOSED smack-down that #California imposed on millions of #independentcontractors?

That they are ‼️STILL‼️ fighting? The law that says you cannot even do #Rideshare unless @uber, @lyft, @Grubhub
... EMPLOY you as an official employee of the company. 😱

Even IF they could afford to do that (and these companies have ALREADY said they CANNOT,) you could not:

🔸set your own schedule
🔸where you want to work
🔸or any other #sidehustle - GONE

Not sure if you’re in this 📦?

1 In #Tunisia there were 1025 confirmed cases of #COVID19 as of 7 May. The country has responded to the threat of #COVID19 with a strong lockdown from 22 March to 3 May, with an Oxford Stringency Index of 90.61. The lockdown had a strong negative effect on employment and income.
2 As a compensation measure #CashTranfers of max TND 200 (USD70) were established for both #FormalWorkers and registered #SelfEmployed with suspended or reduced work activity and for poor and vulnerable hhs in the social registry. See the decrees: bit.ly/3bbo9MB

If you're #SelfEmployed, #freelance or #SmallBusiness, applying for #unemploymentbenefits for the first time, here's what I learned when applying for #PUA from the California #EDD. First of all, you start here and create a new account: ow.ly/7vwt50zxuz0
Once you register for a new account with Benefit Programs Online, you will be able to proceed to "UI Online," then "File a New Claim." Like many self-employed professionals, my income has fallen off a cliff, but not dried up completely. That's OK; you can still file.
Assuming you worked full-time in your business before, enter your previous hours per week as 40 & your annual income as the net income claimed on your Schedule C last year. That's at the very bottom, Line 31. As long as your net income is over $17,368, you qualify.

I am so disappointed by @RishiSunak ‘s announcement for the self employed.

I don’t have a loud voice like @piersmorgan @MartinSLewis or @BorisJohnson - but that doesn’t mean I cannot express my voice about the #selfemployed during this #CoronavirusLockdownUK Image
The most vulnerable people within that group are the recently self employed. They are a group who have slipped through the net and not covered by any support.

It’s not about a sense of entitlement. It’s that this government has decided some people are worthy and some are not. Image
Either support nobody or everybody.

Those self employed in the last year can’t access any support. This is a financial death sentence to some families.

Some will be forced to find alternative work - and directly go against staying home, protecting the NHS and saving lives. Image

The delayed package of financial support for self-employed people, outlined by the UK government this evening, simply isn't good enough. People cannot be expected to wait until June to pay their bills and feed their families #selfemployed #coronavirus
I'm also concerned for many people who may not be eligible for this scheme - including those who have become self-employed in recent months. They need support too and no one should be left behind #selfemployed #coronavirus
The SNP has been pressing for urgent financial support for self-employed people for weeks now. There is no excuse. Many measures could already have been introduced - including using the tax & welfare system to give everyone a guaranteed basic income now #selfemployed #coronavirus

Let’s start from the top. The music business is like the finance industry 20 years ago. Unregulated by governments who misunderstand how it works. When I direct my anger at ‘the IFPI’, I’m talking about the Major Labels: @UMG, @sonymusic & @warnermusic.
They have been able to run the market based on their terms. They own more than two thirds of ALL recorded music. You may ask, but *how* have competition authorities allowed this to happen? Sadly the answer is: fuck knows.
They are presently making between 20 and 50 million dollars every single day from streaming and this is how they did it.

I've written to @RishiSunak calling for an urgent cross-party meeting to discuss the financial measures that are still needed for self-employed and unemployed people - to ensure everyone has a guaranteed income and no one is left behind #selfemployed #Coronavirus
The SNP has welcomed the important measures that have been introduced so far - but it is vital that a financial package is introduced specifically for the millions of self-employed and unemployed people who also need support in this unprecedented emergency #Coronavirus
Its my view the UK govt should use the tax & welfare system to provide a guaranteed income for everyone, including self-employed & unemployed people - putting money in people's pockets through a Universal Basic Income, reverse National Insurance, or similar mechanism #Coronavirus
