Finding a girl for my son was difficult, as nobody was ready to marry their daughters to a family where the lady of the house worked as a caterer. But, I never gave up on my work or my hope,” says 74-year-old Santoshini Mishra, who runs a catering business in Sambalpur, Odisha.
Santoshini's husband used to run a pan shop and was the family's sole breadwinner. But he had to quit his business due to an illness, and the whole responsibility fell on her shoulders.

“My life wouldn’t have been this happy and lively without this cycle. It has kept me away from health issues," says the 74-year-old Jyotsana Kagal, who has proved that age is just a number and that one can pursue their dreams and passions at any stage. Image
Growing up in the Bankikodla village of Gokarna, Jyotsna had always been fascinated by bicycles and watched men and boys riding them with wonder. At 14, she borrowed bikes from her neighbours and taught herself to ride.

When she began working as an Anganwadi worker,
she purchased her first bicycle in 1968, as until then, she had been riding boys’ bicycles. Only after buying her own bike did she ride a ladies’ bicycle. In 1976, Jyotsna even caught a thief by chasing him on her bicycle, which remains her favourite adventure on the gear.

"The day I got my postgraduate degree, I didn’t waste a minute– I rushed back to my village, Ausgrum in Bengal, to become a teacher.

#Inspiration #Teacher #Education #PadmaShri #SeniorCitizens #HeroesOfHumanity #WestBengal
Yes, I had higher salary offers from schools in bigger towns, but for me, the 169 Rs I was offered at my school village meant everything.

I was hungry for teaching the students from my town who needed a good teacher the most.
I taught at my school for 39 years and only retired because I’d hit my ‘retirement age’– 60; what a ridiculous concept!

Afterwards, I expected to spend years drinking sugary tea and wasting my time on the charpoy!

#Thread #Health #Elders #SeniorCitizens

By Arnaldo Liechtenstein, physician: "Whenever, I teach #clinical #Medicine to students in the fourth year of medicine, I ask the following question:

"What are the causes of mental confusion in the elderly?"

1
Some answer: "Tumors in the head".

I answer: No!

Others suggest: "Early symptoms of Alzheimer's".

I answer again: No!

With each rejection of their answers, their responses dry up.

And they are even more open-mouthed, when I list the three most common causes:

2
- uncontrolled diabetes
- urinary infection
- dehydration

It may sound like a joke; but it isn't.

People over 60 generally stop feeling thirsty and consequently, stop drinking fluids.
When no one is around to remind them to drink fluids, they quickly dehydrate.

Recent reports indicate that elderly people are being evicted from their homes in alarming numbers. A couple in their 80s seeking assistance visited Jayanagar MLA's office recently.

Everyone has the right to live with dignity.

Many elder people don't report it because of fear of retaliation. Aside from that, they don't want to complain about their children or cast the family in a bad light.

Despite this, many are unaware of a laws that protects senior citizens from abuse and neglect

2/5
1) The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

It states that parents and grandparents who are unable to maintain themselves from their own earning can seek maintenance from their children.

@NandiniVenkate3 in her note, mentioned that being a Senior Citizen in India is scary. And I might add, "is tough as well". That tweet,
generated a lot of traction.
Let me try and address some part of it.
From a finance standpoint, There are 3 aspects of being a senior citizen: a. Health and Health Insurance Costs; b. A steady income from broad source of asset base. c. People who will put Vultures to shame and acting in the financial services industry space.
I will address the 1st part in this thread and why PM / must make an intervention.
Health Insurance to senior citizens is problematic. As they move into an age where they are faced with a prospect of reduced steady income, the demands on that money goes up.

I feel there are two surgical procedures that have changed people's lives for the better more than anything else in the last 2 decades.

One is total knee replacements. I remember watching so many Aji Ajobas struggle to just move from one room to another as a kid because of bad
knees.

Now I see so many people in the 60-80 age group climb stairs and walk on the Deccan Gymkhana ground effortlessly thanks to their new knees!

The other is dental implants. I don't think there is adequate awareness of how life changing they are and hence this thread.
For starters, I would like to share something I have observed over the last one year.

It is sad but true that most "Mothers" in the 60-80 age group are the epitome of sacrifice.

More than anything else their personal health has been neglected.Specifically their dental status!

Recently,there's been huge outcry over #Cessation of 7.75% #RBI #taxablebonds,that were issued in Jan2018,with 7yr maturity

Outcry is unjustified

#Repo rate is 4% now,lowest in last 20 yrs,to benefit borrowers

Its only practical to see realignment
of lending rate&savings rate!
For those in tax bracket of 30%,return is 5.4%,while for those in lowest bracket of 10%,post-tax return is 6.97%

Those in 30% bracket but with 5Cr+ invested, get post tax return of 4.4%

#Cessation means no fresh subscribers;Existing investors dont need to redeem till maturity!
Those alleging,#SeniorCitizens will get adversely affected by #Cessation of these bonds, are wrong

Senior citizens can invest in #VayaVandanaYojana, with 10 yr lock-in,at 7.4%;This scheme was to expire on 31stMarch2020,but has been renewed for another 3yrs by @narendramodi gov👍
