The story of the #BuildBackBetter has yet to be written. Let’s examine the 50 Republican US Senators who are voting against lifting children out of poverty, education, elder care, affordable prescription drugs, child care & family leave? What does this mean for YOUR STATE? Image

@NandiniVenkate3 in her note, mentioned that being a Senior Citizen in India is scary. And I might add, "is tough as well". That tweet,
generated a lot of traction.
Let me try and address some part of it.
From a finance standpoint, There are 3 aspects of being a senior citizen: a. Health and Health Insurance Costs; b. A steady income from broad source of asset base. c. People who will put Vultures to shame and acting in the financial services industry space.
I will address the 1st part in this thread and why PM / must make an intervention.
Health Insurance to senior citizens is problematic. As they move into an age where they are faced with a prospect of reduced steady income, the demands on that money goes up.

This is hard to write but it is true for many. What I’m about to say is a harsh reality of what people go through.

What I am about to say is also the reason why a lot of people don’t ask for help.

People do not ask for help because of the fears and stigmas that exist.

Here Is Something to think about,

What if you were a #singleparent with a #child

You work full time for $15.00/hr

You take home roughly $960.00 per paycheck (bi-weekly after taxes)

#singleparent #parenting #Blessed #grateful #calgary #calgarylife #alberta #yyc

@EveryAlbertan
Your bills per month:

$1,000 or more for rent
$150 or more for cable/internet
$250 or more for utilities
$150 per month for car insurance

So let’s do the math

You bring home about
$1,920.00 a month

Your bills average about $1,500(give or take)

This month marks a decade since I completed medical #internship. I thought then that I had achieved my goal, that I would find joy in my work. Little did I know where life would lead me. My #reminisces & #reflections - too long for a tweet & too short for a blog - hence, a 🧵
As the first & only #medical student in the extended family, I was in #unfamiliar waters. Moving to uncle's house in another city was a not-too-comfortable but not-wholly-unpleasant change. I'm privileged to be part of a family who did all they could to keep me happy
The pedagogy was #authoritative & #oppressive; seemed to be designed to #humiliate, not teach. I couldn't learn by rote, didn't know of any better ways (pre- ubiquitous smartphone era) Expected to address #seniors using honorifics, I felt they were as unapproachable as teachers

Earlier today we were in downtown #yyc handing out water & gatorade and fruit, when we decided to stop & have a break by the Cat Cafe...when we came upon a senior lady rummaging through the city's garbage bins.

#Yyccc #Calgary #Alberta #Canada #SeniorLiving #seniorcare #Seniors
We thought she was looking for bottles to turn in for money but we were wrong. She was looking for both bottles & she was also taking food out of the bins & putting it in her cart.

As soon as we saw that we went over to offer her our help.

#Help #Community #Compassion #BeKind
We went over, asked if we could get her a cold drink & a snack & asked her if she'd like to join us on our break.

She accepted. We went into the coffee shop across from the Cat Cafe (Forgot Name), grabbed some drinks & snacks and sat down in the shade across the street. #Hope

This morning we saw something we will NEVER forget.

We were at the #Walmart in Southeast #Calgary. We were shopping for some groceries when my stepson saw someone take a package of meat and put it under their shirt and then slowly walk over to their cart. #Food #Hungry #Alberta
This person had very few things in their cart. My stepson knows what I do here at @HarvestHillsYYC & he asked if we could help them.

I said yes we could but that this person would feel ganged up on if we all walked over to them, so I told him to stay here and that I’d walk over.
I walked over to where they had their cart and said “I know what it is like to struggle. I would love it if you’d let me help you and I’d like to pay for your groceries.”

This person looked up at me and said “did you see me take the meat?” I said “yes I did. I’d like to help”.

We have a serious emergency.

Late this afternoon we were contacted by a senior named “Helen”. She only had one meal left in her kitchen.

She called us for help and we are helping.

We will be using the last of our available funds to get her some much needed groceries. #YYC #YEG
We will hopefully be giving her enough groceries for an entire month so she doesn’t have to worry about having to choose between medications/food, food/electricity, food/rent.

Too many #Calgarians are being ignored and forgotten. Too many #Calgarians are afraid to ask for #help.
We need help. If anyone can help with a donation towards her food hamper, we will be here for about 2 more hours because we are shopping for four seniors tonight.

You can help by donating by any of the options ⬇️ #Donate #community #donations #DisabilityTwitter #BeKind #Alberta

1. Finally, I managed to spare 2 hours to do my own analysis. This thread is for anyone who, like me, is really curious about the containment of #COVID19 Death & Mortality over time, free from left/right political bias or conspiracy theories. It is unfortunate such an ..
2.. analysis is either unavailable or politicized. Here we go:
Y-axis: Absolute Difference in % All-cause Excess Mortality by age group for different states between Mid Dec. 2020 (Phase 1 of pandemic) & May 15, 2021, Phase II after shots & mandatory masks.
X-axis: % of resident..
3.. in each state who received at least one shot as of June 6, 2006. The confidence box at +/- 10% Excess mortality rate difference: Arbitrarily used as a level of insignificance caused by report delays or noise. Much of the data lies within this box.
Conclusions:

Thermal scanners finally getting attention for their inaccuracy in screening for #COVID19. I’ve covered thermography in detail over the pandemic in an effort to raise awareness about the differences in how #fever presents by age and even time of day. –a thread--
On March 4, 2021, the @US_FDA released a statement indicating “improper use of thermal imaging systems may lead to inaccurate body temperature measurements which can present potentially serious public health risks.” #publichealth

Today, @washingtonpost released a story highlighting the @US_FDA warnings on thermal scanners and recent research showing many of the devices use software that can make a feverish person appear perfectly well.

This evening at 4:45pm we got a call from a social worker that works with seniors. She called us in a frenzy asking us for immediate help.

She told us of an emergency so extreme that her voice shook with concern over one of her clients.

#YYC #Calgary #CalgarySeniors #hope
This is what she said:

"Hello Jen, I was hoping I would be able to contact you before I left my work for the day in regards to a rather important situation that came across my desk this afternoon. I hope you have the time to chat?"

I said "Yes of course, how can we help?" #care
She said "We have a senior lady that is struggling so much that she has been going door to door asking for food from others in her complex."

I was quiet and honestly speechless.

I said "Of course we can and we will help. What is it that you need." #FEEDYYC #FoodHamper #helping

1/4I feel those that chose not to wear a mask are selfish because it is not themselves they are protecting. They are protecting others. I heard in Asian continents if you DO NOT wear a mask you are considered an outcast. People do not like you. They do not want you around them
2/4It is about respect for human lives. About respect for your fellow man NO MATTER what you believe. WEAR A MASK. If you do not and find out you have COVID. I hope these APPS eventually tell you how many #disabled #seniors #kids #sick that you passed it on too and killed.
3/4And Canada needs to make it so the disabled can afford PPE. The Right kind and keep it clean or be able to wear three. I want to save lives not take them. I need this Because I cannot afford to stay in and have groceries delivered. In fact I go without food. #ODSPoverty

1/3 I had a lot of time to do thinking while in this fleabag motel. As I thought I recalled a speech I think it was Harris but do not hold me to that. It was said that the OAS pension would run out by 2021. If anyone can find that on Youtube or newspaper I would appreciate.
2/3As I have not hidden this tweeter who is disabled and 51 yrs old believes #seniors #disabled #vets and anyone who relies on the govt, are being culled. Does it not seem strange that this vaccine MAY be ready by the END 2021. We have the biggest population of #seniors right now
3/3 Baby boomers are aging and are Seniors. So since the OAS is running out. And #disabled are being completely ignored during this WORSE time during the pandemic. Yet they say there are discretionary funds for the #disabled but TRUST THIS TWEETER there is nothing. #ODSPoverty

This is the #DemPartyPlatform for 2020. This part is called: Protecting LGBTQ+ Rights
Only one party has a specific plan ensuring the rights of LGBTQ+ people and will fight to enact The #EqualityAct. Dems will not allow discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons to stand. 1/10
#Democrats applaud this year’s #SCOTUS decision that made clear that employment discrimination based on sexual orientation & gender identity violates the law, but we know we still have work to do to ensure LGBTQ+ people are treated equally under the law and in our society. 2/10
#Democrats will fight to enact the #EqualityAct and at last outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in housing, public accommodations, access to credit, education, jury service, and federal programs. 3/10 #DemPartyPlatform

Thank you for having me on the @ELRAgeSpeaks Radio Show @MervChangeAGEnt. You are a wonderful host.
If anyone is interested in listening to my dulcet tone 😂 you have come to the right place.
Other reasons to give it a listen:
1. It’s sexual health week, so it’s my annual reminder that many older adults are sexually active, enjoy a variety of sexual acts, take sexual risks, but can face structural and personal barriers to realising their sexual agency and expression #SHW20 #SHW2020
2. You get to hear my Barnsley accent 😱

May not hit you personally; it affects your coworkers.
These draconian changes affect all performers: day players, stunts, singers, stand-ins, background actors, dancers, recording artists, voice-over artists, broadcasters, and most importantly, the seniors who built our Union.
LET’S TALK #RESIDUALS

For #SAGAFTRA Members over 65 taking their pensions, residuals no longer will count as earnings.
BUT! These same members will have contributions made into the Plan on those earnings. These same members will continue to pay dues and taxes on them.

No matter how much you love that toddler you are carrying around, if he weighs 25 pounds or more, there is a chance you could injure yourself carrying him on repeated occasions. Interestingly, two day's worth of saturated adult #diapers could be close to this weight. 1/

It's Sunday ('sexual rights day') and I'm thinking about the sexual and reproductive health of older women as this is an area that gets very little attention. A call to remember that #SRHR should be approached from a lifecourse perspective #seniors #sex #OlderAdults #SexRightsAge
For women post-menopause, there can be consequences from their earlier reproductive health that affect their current health status, in particular gynaecologic and obstetric issues #SRHR #SexRightsAge
And as inequalities tend to become more profound as we get older (e.g. where ageism prevents awareness, understanding, and progress) older women do not get the #SRHR care they require #SexRightsAge
