After 6 years in orbit, we say goodbye to @CopernicusEU #Sentinel1B and thank you to teams here at ESA’s #MissionControl, who for months have worked tirelessly to troubleshoot the issue that has now resulted in end of mission 👉esa.int/Applications/O…
As the first mission of the @CopernicusEU Programme, Sentinel-1 comprises two satellites orbiting 180 degrees apart, providing all-weather, day-and-night imagery of Earth’s surface, designed, built, launched and flown by @ESA.
The partner satellite, Sentinel-1A, remains healthy in orbit, continuing to deliver high-quality radar images for a multitude of applications.

Our focus is on fast-tracking the launch of Sentinel-1C.

On Monday, for the first time, we performed a set of manoeuvres to avoid a high-risk collision w. #SpaceDebris created in the #Cosmos1408 anti-satellite test last year.

This was a difficult #CollisionAvoidance manoeuvre.👏👏to our #Sentinel1A Control Team & Space Debris Office
#CollisionAvoidance monitoring is unfortunately routine work at #MissionControl, and our teams are well-practiced in reacting to high-risk events.

This near head-on #collision was however unique; the situation evolved rapidly, was tricky to avoid, AND we had <24 hrs warning
Sentinal-1A, part of the @CopernicusEU Sentinel-1 radar observatory providing day-and-night images of Earth’s surface, had its orbit altered by 140 m in order to prevent collision with a debris fragment ~several cm in diameter

Satellite imagery reveals first losses due to the #Tonga #tsunami.
It seems that the uninhabited islands of Nuku and Tau have been completely eroded. Their larger neighbors Tonumea and Kelefesia were at least partially inundated.

Satellite imagery via @sentinel_hub #Sentinel1 Image
@sentinel_hub Nomuka island , North of #Tonga was also significantly affected. Its barrier islands Nomuka Iki was at least partially inundated and traces of inundation seem visible for the main town of Nomuka (400-500 people).

Interpretation is difficult. Image
A few more islands show traces of inundation. Unfortunately, there is not yet much data available to assess more regions.

Waiting for imagery for Nuku'alofa and the islands of Fiji.

There has been a major explosive eruption from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai in Tonga. The volcano has been actively erupting since 20 Dec 2021. There are already many news stories and posts about this event. We will add info here to provide context & links.

volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn…
Very little is known about the evolution of this volcano. The earliest recorded observation of an eruption was in 1912, followed by 1937, and then 1988, 2009, and 2014-15. Those eruptions have all been small, but with so few events there's no good understanding of activity style.
The 1988 eruption was seen by fishermen and a airline pilot, then visited by geologists. It took place from 3 shallow-water vents E of Hunga Ha'apai island, but there was no island built.

An #eruption of #Nyiragongo #volcano (#DRC) began in the evening of May 22. #Meteosat satellite data (from @CIRA_CSU) show a strong thermal anomaly appearing at 17:15 UTC, and a small #volcanic plume amidst widespread regional convection. Follow @CharlesBalagizi for updates.
If you're looking for background info on #Nyiragongo and its previous flank #eruptions in 1977 and 2002, there's a collection of papers in the Italian Acta Vulcanologica journal available here (with free PDFs):

#Sentinel5P #Tropomi data on May 23 show SO₂ emissions from the #Nyiragongo #eruption. SO₂ to the SE over #Tanzania is at higher altitude (perhaps to tropopause level) and was emitted during the initial, more energetic phase of the eruption (17:00 UTC, May 22). @VirungaSupersit Image

ImageImage
