1/ Last month, NYC launched its first curbside #composting effort in Queens, with the goal of expanding across the city to keep the 8M pounds of residential #FoodWaste generated daily from rotting in #landfills and createing #climate damaging emissions. buff.ly/40Mmyqu
2/ After the food scraps are collected, they’re sent to one of two #AnerobicDigestion facilities, where bacteria break down #organic materials in the absence of oxygen to creates a mixture of gases – or #biogas, which can be burned to produce #energy.
3/ But, as @LFO has made clear, #AnerobicDigestion can get tricky. Particularly when #FoodScraps are sent to the #digesters at wastewater treatment plants, which are used to reduce the volume of #SewageSludge. This is happening in NYC. buff.ly/3HNF4s4

Looking forward to what should be an interesting conversation on the current state of sewage pollution in England's rivers & seas #GW4
Prof Ian Barke (@droughtandflood) notes that the recent media interest in storm overflows & sewage spills, which paints a "false picture" over the fact this has long been part of the water network #GW4
Baker then gives an overview of the scale of the issue. Says that there is more transparency from water companies in terms of monitoring. #GW4 ImageImage

As we already know from our first post about Munich’s sewage system it was created over 200 years ago and only happened after a big #epidemic catastrophe in which Queen Therese of Bavaria died. 1900 around 78% of the 480.000 citizens of #Munich were connected to the #sewer.

During that time, all the #wastewater was just added to the Isar river in the north of Munich. The city’s #sewagesystem was built with a small decline to the north. Therefore, it didn’t need a lot of pumps or other technical equipment to channel the #water in that

EU expresses "deep concern" about UK releases of raw sewage into the sea. In the #brexit deal, the UK promised not to regress from existing EU environmental law. The European Commission is monitoring the situation, an official tells MEPs. @EP_Fisheries @VSinkevicius
European Commission is watching for changes to UK environmental law to check there is no "regression" from existing EU marine standards. EU is also gathering evidence from France on the possible impact of UK sewage releases. #brexit #sewage
The EU would also like to remind the UK that, despite #brexit, the UK is still a signatory to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic

Lots of misinformation being churned out about the DEFRA ‘Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan’, so here’s some context 🧵

I’m not a lawyer, but its part of my job to understand the laws that govern our rivers, how they’re applied, and how they’re supposed to work…
Since 1991 it has been illegal to “cause or knowingly permit any poisonous, noxious or polluting matter or any solid waste matter to enter any controlled waters”.

Controlled waters = all rivers, lakes, ponds, groundwater, coastal waters and 3 miles out from territorial waters…
Specifically for sewage, even if “the undertaker did not cause or knowingly permit the discharge but was bound to receive into the sewer or works matter included in the discharge” (such as 💩), “the undertaker is deemed to have caused the discharge”.

Pretty open and shut…

There’s an explosion of interest about #sewage in our rivers and seas, and concerns about what this means for people swimming in our rivers and seas. We’ve been working on this and the threat that antibiotic resistant bacteria #AMR poses to human health. A 🧵of key results:
1/8 Our systematic review of the risk of experiencing symptoms of infection after sea bathing in high-income countries found people who bathe in the sea are more likely to feel ill afterwards, compared to people who stay on land. tinyurl.com/mr27p6bs
2/8 Our recent epidemiological survey of English and Welsh beach goers in 2014-2015 also showed that the risk of illness (like diarrhoea and vomiting) was higher in bathers compared to non-bathers. tinyurl.com/4tzebj8s

This weeks bumper harvest of e.Coli, from Martlesham Creek, on the beautiful River Deben. The legal limit is nine (9) blue dots, people. Courtesy of @AnglianWater . #Sewage @CleanRiversPGH @sascampaigns @Feargal_Sharkey
There’s a prize for anyone who can count all the dots, because I can’t be bothered now, it’s so appalling. We’ve been testing for six months now, and finding illegal levels all year round.
@Anglianwater operates a sewage treatment plant there….and we get similar readings every week. #CitizenScience is working.

1/4 Let's play storm overflows spot the difference!

Reasons why #sewage💩pollution is a problem are varied and need a cross-govt / system-wide solution. How much has changed between past-present-future @pow_rebecca @Dunne4Ludlow @PutneyFleur? Here's how sewers started off:
2/4 Now here's our rather dismal present:

ill-conceived development / highway infrastructure doesn't properly consider water, nature or people.
Poor maintenance, bad practice all over the place and climate change exacerbating.
3/4 But! Here's an entirely possible future:

- Water-smart
- Climate resilient
- Green, healthy and nature-rich
- People-centric
- Vibrant and productive
- Minimal storm overflows

Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in the environment and animal samples of the Huanan Seafood Market

researchsquare.com/article/rs-137…
Of course they point the finger elsewhere

"studies from different countries suggest that SARS-CoV-2 circulation preceded initial detection of cases.. Some positive samples were detected earlier than 1st case in Wuhan, suggesting circulation in other regions may have been missed"
As suspected more #sewage from George Gao

Of the 110 samples collected from sewers or sewerage wells in the market, 24 samples were positive for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid. All 4 sewerage wells in the market tested positive.

Some inaccurate claims about the #EnvironmentBill have been circulated over the weekend.

Our proposals will categorically reduce, not increase, the amount of untreated #sewage in our waters.

Here's how 👇🧵
(1/9) Picture of Meandering River Wye
There have been claims that our amendment is weaker than the one put forward by the Lords - this is incorrect.

Our amendment says that water companies must progressively reduce harm from #StormOverflows.
(2/9)
That means they must reduce the operation of storm overflows - plain and simple. This does not override existing law, but places an ADDITIONAL duty on companies.

Our version brings the new duty under the Water Industry Act’s powerful enforcement mechanism.

YOU HAVE JUST 12 HOURS LEFT TO SAVE YOUR LOCAL RIVER.

Today Gov will vote to legalise the wholesale dumping of sewage into our rives.

Just as MPs were mislead over the cost of fixing sewage overflows, #SewageScandal #sewage environment groups have now also been mislead.
Gov were given 1 more opportunity to get this right but instead they have decided to squander in by overturning a House of Lords amendment.

Gov now want to allow water companies to dump sewage all of the time so long as they claim to be making a "progressive reduction".
That will allow water companies to legally dump sewage into our rivers on a scale that currently is illegal.

Act now. Write to you MP today and demand that at tomorrow's vote they support the House of Lords amendment.

On Dec 12th 2019 I cried.

Every #Tory MP who signed up to #GetBrexitDone” however utterly sh*t it was, at THAT MOMENT, sealed our fate.

Personal ambition & greed trumped any sense of public duty or responsibility.

ANYTHING @BorisJohnson wanted to do was made possible.

His wealthy backers & sycophantic MP & media facilitators rubbed their hands w/ glee, no-one could touch him now!

A man lacking any moral compass who dreamed of being king, a terrifying combination, both disastrous for the UK & lethal for many 1000s.

He simply does not care!

From #Sewage on our beaches to the collapse of the #NHS, he does not care.

From sitting maskless & asleep beside #DavidAttenborough to departing #COP26 in a private jet, he does not care.

For the 1000s of avoidable #COVID deaths & 1000s more w/ #LongCovid, he does not care.

The government has just u-turned, or should that be u-bent, and accepted the amendment on sewage after all, which is rather embarrassing for all the Tory MPs who have spent two days explaining why they had no choice but to vote against it.

Pressure works. Here, and in a sewer.
Never think twitter activism is a waste of time. Without all of us, this wouldn't have happened. Simple. Now let's see what they actually do. #TorySewageParty #Sewage

Senate A&R now amending a bill to apparently again make the highly ineffective and expensive film tax credit refundable at a cost of $75 million a year, giving away a massive amount of money on an idea that was never given a public hearing or introduced as a bill. #sewage
In addition, Kentucky will be required to refund federal aid equal to the cost of all tax cuts and tax breaks like the film tax credit because of the new provisions of the American Rescue Plan. A double hit to our budget. #kyga21

Meanwhile in #France,
"the peak of this second wave is over"

(according to the President in his Adress to the Nation):
Wait... "the peak is over" doesn´t mean "it´s back to normal"!

Confinement will only fall on December 15,
if there´s less than 5.000 new cases a day.
(today it´s ~9.000).

France is disappointed.🙁

Although they certainly can make it happen.
Meanwhile in #Switzerland:
(excess mortality of the second wave is significant)

Good news: fastest decrease in infections happens in the worst hit areas now.
