It’s time again! June 2nd is #Internationalwhoresday when we celebrate the daring tricks and whorestorical delights of the 1975 French #sexworkers strike.

So if you dig a good #whorestory join me as I reach into the archives (if I can get it together).

1/15 Thread 1975 Lyon sex workers occupy the St Nizier Church, Lyon supp
The strike was prompted by a string of unsolved brutal murders of sex workers in and around Lyon. At the same time, the police also clamped down on the small hotels where sex workers saw their clients. Sound familiar? Lyon's Chief of Police was eventually charged with pimping a
The 40 year + contemporary sex worker rights movement has a vibrant history but most people will have trouble finding anything about it in the public sphere cause stigma means whores are rarely seen as capable of organising anything let alone a workers rights movement. The strike however made headlines in newspapers all over the

This is not how supply and demand economic theory WORKS people?!?!? #EndDemand initiatives for #SexWork does NOT enable #trafficking. Think about it. Let’s kick this #EndDemand can all the way down the road, shall we?
#Trafficking is a crime. Pimping is a crime. #DMST is a crime And they STAY crimes under #FullDecrim. Full stop. BUT we STOP arresting adult consensual #SexWorkers AND we don’t entrap their clients in stings. The BONUS is we ALSO stop arresting A LOT of victims of #SexTrafficking
Supporting #EndDemand initiatives is a knee jerk reaction to a complicated problem. But NOT ARRESTING grown adults for adult consensual behavior (that is perfectly legal if they do it for free) is not such a crazy idea. It actually makes a LOT of sense if you step back a bit

Coercive interventions like #EndDemand and #NordicModel are knee jerk reaction policies that are not sound economic or social policies and continue to perpetuate stigma, discrimination and increase exploitation and violence. #ListenToSexWorkers and include them in MEANINGFUL ways
Meaningful involvement is not performative. It is not an afterthought. It means including us before you start, while you develop and as you implement programs that affect our lives. And INSIST on having #SexWorkers evaluate the success in an ongoing plan.
Our community is packed with a variety of lived experiences & we will share these experiences to help you reduce exploitation and violence. Come with an open heart and a willingness to listen and learn the logical way to meet needs of the people who need good policies the mostly

The myth has even been debunked by antis-trafficking. Law enforcement has reported this as a myth with heavy spin of course -pivoting to “we are looking for missing kids” or “this a daily thing”. And even @polaris_project started backpedaling in 2016 polarisproject.org/blog/2016/02/t…
In their 2016 blog post @Polaris_Project states “This post is part of an ongoing series confronting the myths and misconceptions surrounding human trafficking.” But then of course they doubled down on the “widespread issue” by pointing out it happens 365 days year…

The 40 year + contemporary sex worker rights movement has a history but most will have trouble finding it. So each year on June 2nd #sexworkers everywhere commemorate one of their movement's most vivid revolts and share their whorestories on #InternationalWhoresDay. Enjoy.
Strike headquarters was St Nizier Church in Lyon, a celebrated example of French Gothic architecture visited by thousands of tourists each year. But amongst the Churches many displays there's none that acknowledge its week-long asylum seekers who became global media sensations.
But experienced sex worker activists like Roberta Perkins from the Australian Prostitutes Collective knew about the French strike and, during the 1980's she'd recount to us young whores the story of the strike and other #sexworker protests. These were our "motivational moments".

cw: suicide, reactionary bs
[Thread]

One thing that really pissies me off are those facist reactionary "#ProLife" bigots.

And I'll explain in detail, WHY they are bigoted.

So strap in and hold tight...
Regardless if those advocate for the [very facist] idea of de-facto criminalizing #suicide or #abortions, "#ProLife" advocates aka. bigots are not willing to provide even a halfass alternative substitute as a figleaf to pseudo-legitimize their ideas.
I mean, regardless whether or not one person should be allowed to have a say into the health, life and well-beijng of another person is something agrees with [I think #ProChoice is the only non - reactionary-facist answer!]...

When we said that the #EARNITAct is being pushed hard right now? @senrobportman just signed on as a co-sponsor, noting the WILD success of #SESTA #FOSTA - lets look at that incredible success, shall we?
First, if you want to read about tech/trafficking from a human rights perspective, can't recommend the Anti-#Trafficking Review more. Their last issue was entirely on tech, including #SESTA, but also other areas of labor/migration/surveillance antitraffickingreview.org/index.php/atrj…
Maybe the Senators backing these bills could send an intern to ya know... read up on this stuff before passed bad legislation... but I digress. So the success of #SESTA, shall we?

Can we talk about how you are you are imposing YOUR rhetorical logic to deny #sexworkers our own agency to name when we are being raped? Can we talk about how we DO NOT GIVE YOU CONSENT to describe OUR experiences for us?

@af3irmhawaii @AF3IRM @AF3IRMLA @jollenelevid Tweet from @af3irm: All wor...
It might make certain theoretical sense to claim ALL SEX WORK IS RAPE to people who largely see prostitution as a metaphor, but to sex workers who have actual lived experiences, this statement makes as much sense as saying ALL SEX IS RAPE.
Most of the sex work I have done has been extremely consensual. I do not consent to any feminist, cop, or judge declaring that I have been raped when I know I have not.

I am not an object, I have my own agency, and it is spiritual wickedness to use feminist theory to deny that.

Eagerly and enthusiastically awaiting the conversation with President @BarackObama. ♥️
For those who don't eat, sleep, and breathe #SexualHealth and #SexEd, this is what we're aiming for. We don't want "they didn't say no". We're want "they gave eager and enthusiastic consent." That's where the bar should be.
YES!!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 Starting with spoken word!!! Artists will save us. #ArtIsPolitical

Dear @HiltonAbuja,

1. Thx for ur statement. Apparently, u have serious difficulty stating clearly even under consumer duress that u don't exclude unaccompanied women. so, I'll try & spell it out to u quite clearly.

2. U are being disingenuous& I'll tell u why.
3. Ur staff have told us this "policy" exists. U want to split hairs & suggest "policy" is something that is written down & approved by the board. I have no way of knowing whether that is so here but u know that we know u have this policy & that it's bn there for a long time.
4. This is what we know from ur own staff: U instituted this thing to ensure u exclude #sexworkers - real or imagined - from ur establishment.

5. To achieve that, u created a presumption that every black woman who comes unaccompanied is a suspected #sexworker.

#SexWorkers remind us sex work is about work. Like all workers they #deserve #rights and #protection against violence at workplace, stigma and discrimination in society.

Current criminalisation (in majority of African countries) of sex work means #sexworkers are on the front-line of #GBV in that the perpetrator knows they are unlikely to report it, and that they are vulnerable and unprotected.

#EndGBV #accesstoredress #16days #dignityatwork
In the context of #MeToo: sex workers face judgement, stigma, blatant systematic discrimination. In media, they’re punished 4 their nonconforming sexuality by being criminalized/slut-shamed.

Undercover stings against #sexworkers are acts of state sexual violence. While the loss of Yang Song should make no one question the truth of that, unsurprisingly there is so much pushback on the idea, so I wanted to organize my thoughts in a thread (1/12) documentedny.com/2018/11/26/one…
It's intimate physical contact through fraud. That's sexual violence. Think about what it's like to then have to sit with the cop you gave a blow job to who then arrested you. What about when you're giving info on your experience of trafficking? (2/12) ydr.com/story/news/wat…
Many police departments don't ban sexual contact during sting operations (see above) - when states have tried to ban the practice, police have pushed back and said it was necessary to, you know, sexual violate people in the course of policing cbsnews.com/news/hawaii-la… (3/12)

Visit to the Kwa Muhle Museum. One of the few museums to take a truth telling approach BEFORE the referendum of 1992 and the official fall of #Apartheid in 1994. What this means is that it manages to avoid some of the triumphalism and Mandela-centric efforts that followed. Image
While the attempt to transform the fall of Apartheid into a finish line rather than a starting point (or transition process) IS gaining steam, it is largely kept at bay in public history projects.Erasures & silences on big questions of #colonialism and Apartheid just don't happen
For example, the role of Durban's white public officials in creating some of earliest versions of Apartheid (prior to 1948) and their continued implementation of it through the forced removal of Black people from Cato Manor after 1950 is made very explicit. ImageImage

If your feminism doesn’t include supporting sex worker rights, than you aren’t a real feminist. Here are 10 reasons why decriminalizing sex work is a real feminist issue. refinery29.com/amp/en-us/2016…
Prostitution is absolutely just another job, as is stripping, pro-domming, cam modeling, and porn performing. These jobs should absolutely be decriminalized and de-stigmatized. #sexwork #sexworkiswork #sexworkersvote
Many intelligent, well-informed self-described feminists believe sex work should never be decriminalized. In fact, the decriminalization of sex work is perhaps the single most divisive subject within feminism today. #sexwork #SexWorkIsWork #sexworkersvote

There are three major issues with @tumblr's decision that have very little to do with porn. Firstly, Tumblr's audience skews slightly female and overwhelmingly queer, taking a space to explore sexuality away from communities that don't otherwise really have one. #riptumblr 1/
Second, there is a butterfly effect to consider. As the people who produce non-adult content, but consume in part adult content, jump ship they take their contributions to the platform with them. This makes people who consumed the non-adult content that's lost also leave. 2/
Thirdly, there are issues determining what "adult" even is. Reports are circulating that #transgender bloggers are being told that their material is adult because of their transness. I can't verify these reports, but their existence shows users don't trust Tumblr as arbiter. 3/

Claiming #sexworrkers R “decriminalized” under Nordic regime is 100% bold faced lie. Canada’s #sexwork laws make exchange of sexual services for money illegal 4 the 1st time in Canada. @Puglaas @AHousefather @theJagmeetSingh @R_Boissonnault @MurrayRankin #cdnpoli #RepealPCEPA
When #sexwork is understood as criminal, #sexworkers suffer. Arrest plays a role in this, but being part of criminal activity — and all of the surveillance, isolation, stigma, discrimination, and targeted violence that comes with this — its what is also dangerous. #RepealPCEPA
Since the implementation of #PCEPA some #sexworkers have been arrested and prosecuted for material benefits because of their participation in third party activities #RepealPCEPA

I actually sat with the CEO of @BasisSexWork whilst this journalist @charleshymas interviewed her for this article. Not only has he not mentioned Basis once, but he has deliberately excluded all the positive facts she gave him about the work they do. So I’ll help you out, Charles
We’ll start here, because it’s kind of embarrassingly obvious Charles. In your article, you blame an increase of STD rates in Leeds entirely on the managed zone. The sex workers of Leeds are not responsible for this. In Leeds, people also have sex with non sex workers (weird!)
Since the managed approach has been brought in, reports of violent crime from sex workers to the police has TRIPLED. I wonder why that stat didn’t make it into your article?

How many times will media outlets print this story? "Few convictions for #sextrafficking & forced labour... because most victims do not report it. Unfortunately, people often don't feel they are victims, for them it's a form of work." Unfortunately! tmsnrt.rs/2IBXxKJ
The story's the same no matter what countries migrants leave from or arrive to. They feel they've got work, even if it's worse than what they hoped for. They're making more than they could've. All outsiders' trying to get them to feel like victims to be 'sent home': Waste of Time
What do police & #RescueIndustry achieve? Few convictions because so-called victims won't cooperate. T'would be better to admit defeat and announce drastic deportation policy: 'We're getting rid of migrants we don't want'. But wait, then they couldn't feel good about Rescues.
