Without getting too deep off into it, when Grace Randolph coldly suggested fans decide if they wanna see T'challa die On Screen or Off Screen, she ignored the Trauma Black People are currently experiencing; seeing so many black 'lives' taken - all over social media -
there are several black people who no longer look into the hashtags; cause the emotional trauma is too much. Seeing case after case where injustice happens instead of justice, has worn several black people down. So you wanna kill a movie hero off too now? A Symbol of Hope?
You wanna take, one of the ONLY inspirational images of black MEN off the screens, and focus on all the other characters instead; WHERE HAVE WE as a black society seen THIS movie before??? It's literally Traumatic, once again. Instead, Hollywood will give us #Phastos .......

1 - It's time for #ThreadTalk & today we're swathing ourselves in the history of the kaftan!

Don't know your kaftan from your muumuu, dashiki, or Banyan? That's okay. We'll get there.

This ancient garment became a Regency staple🎩, a 1960s essential ☮️ & a modern must-have.🧥 A striped and heavily embroidered kaftan style robe. The str
2 - The word itself is Persian: خفتان khaftān. In simple terms, it's a tunic or a robe, often open down the front & tied with a sash.

This kind of garment goes back as far as Mesopotamia, but rose to prominence during the Abbasid Caliphate. This bowl dates from the 10thC. A man possibly holding a weapon and wearing a helmet. Abbasi
3 - That said, the garment itself emerged all over antiquity, & adapted through history. How kaftans are used, and the materials they're made from -- that's where things get sticky.

More on that later. Here's another pretty one, an entari from Turkey. Ucetek Entari from Turkey, a kaftan with floral stripes in g

#ShadowAndBone is *very* good! Refreshing to see YA let alone YA fantasy done right, and with largely unknown actors ... the real genius though, is in what they changed to fuse the Grishaverse series together. Total master-stroke that cracks open the world and possibilities.
Excited to see if they can bring ‘King of Scars’ to adaptation too - because they’ve set everything up so beautifully to keep leading on in the universe ...

More on #ShadowAndBone - delighted to see everyone in agreement that Jesper is MVP (~perfect~ casting! I hope it’s a star-making performance and projects come rolling in) I’m also here for Nina!👏👏👏

Okay, so now that I've had a little time to sit with Netflix's #ShadowandBone, I'd like to talk about the way the writers used TV Alina's Shu Han identity in the story and world.

These opinions are my personal feelings and I may feel differently after repeat viewings.
First off, we're never given substantial info as to why the Shu Han are an enemy to Ravka.
To me, it felt like we're told way more about the conflict with West Ravka wanting to separate and become an independent nation. We also have a handful of scenes that explore this conflict.

so i think there are a few different reasons why the fantasy racism subplot in #ShadowAndBone doesn't work, but it mostly boils down to: it FEELS like racism written for the white gaze (1/)
there are a few ways of engaging with race in SFF worlds. three very prominent modes in recent stories have been: A) normalisation, or what we sometimes call "color-conscious" casting, B) SPECIFICALLY anti-racist/colonialist themes (2/)
and C) the awkward middle sibling that wants to be both. this is where #ShadowAndBone sits.
these aren't hard and fast delineations—ofc stories that specifically challenge racism are also going to normalise the presence of non-white people in the narrative (3/)
