MUST READ: These charges publicly reveal the extent of Russia’s hacking of the energy sector, infecting 17,000+ devices, in one case planting malware that crippled the safety locks at Saudi Petro Rabigh, the last thing preventing a shutdown, or even explosion.
Many of these incidents have been publicly reported or the subject of previous sanctions (See: nytimes.com/2020/10/23/us/…) but revealing it now, and tying it to specific Russian agencies, reveals the critical nature of the cyber threat the US is up against.
None of these people will see the inside of a jail cell but Monaco makes the message crystal clear: “The criminal charges…make crystal clear the urgent ongoing need for American businesses to harden their defenses and remain vigilant.”

Just because we have not seen threats to date doesn’t mean we will not see them manifest quickly. Risks may emerge rapidly from a) unintended impacts of cyber attacks within & beyond Ukraine by both state & non-state actors; 2/
b) opportunistic targeting of US-based critical infrastructure by criminal ransomware gangs; or c) deliberate targeting by Russian state-sponsored malicious cyber actors in retaliation for actions taken by the US & our Allies to impose costs on Russia. 3/

To be clear, this is not a projection of confirmed cases, faced restricted testing. Some of these cases may be asymptomatic & may not be aware of their condition. Some may end up with Long-COVID after asymptomatic infection. Chart is to end of Jan, 3 mill, in a pop of 4.4 mill.
It is not safe to reopen with transmission so high, hospitals overwhelmed and surveillance all but cancelled. Wear the best mask you can, delay optional interactions if possible a few more weeks. Insist and clean, safe air.
