2/20 By āSteel on the Seabedā I mean #shipwrecks from the period c. 1850-1950 ā a period of numerous radical transformations in ships but also in the communities whose lives they touched. These historic steel artefacts within the marine environment still reverberate. #SWOS20
3/20 In 1832 before most were even built, Lyell surmised āIt is probable that a greater number of monuments of the skill and industry of man [sic] will be collected together in the bed of the ocean than will exist at any other time on the surface of the continentsā. #SWOS20
Two of the many boats in distress in the Central #Mediterranan that reached out to the Alarm Phone in November went missing. We fear that these are two invisible & silenced #shipwrecks that #European authorities refuse to acknowledge.
On November 21, 94 people fleeing from #Libya alerted us when their rubber boat was deflating. Two #NGO vessels, #OpenArms and #AitaMari, searched all night in vain. #EU authorities refused to respond to the distress & to acknowledge a potential shipwreck.
On November 29, a blue wooden boat with 70 people alerted us from #Malta #SAR zone as water was entering the boat. We alerted European authorities & #AlanKurdi. We were told that @Armed_Forces_MT searched for the boat & couldn't find it. Since then, no answers, only silence.
