Wat de Gouden Eeuw voor Amsterdam was, was de Renaissance voor Florence. De stad bloeide en groeide als nooit tevoren en werd het centrum van de macht in Italië en van de kunst in (West-)Europa. Macht, schoonheid, roem, opkomst en teloorgang: het kenschetst de stad.
De term Renaissance werd pas veel later geïntroduceerd door Giorgio Vasari (later meer over hem), die eigenlijk de eerste kunsthistoricus was. Hij beschrijft vooral de terugkeer naar de (waarden van de) klassieke oudheid en het mensbeeld. Grofweg start de Renaissance met Cimabue.
Cimabue (1240-1302) wordt gezien als de eerste Renaissance-kunstenaar. Hij maakte schilderwerken in de Byzantijnse traditie, maar dan mét diepgang en in meer levensechte verhoudingen. Hij was een ongekende pionier en geroemd door o.a. tijdgenoot Dante. Hij was ook heel lelijk.
