Attending an academic conference soon?
Going by reports and polls on Twitter, you probably have a 10-20% chance of getting #COVID19 there.
Here's a small thread with some evidence and some suggestions. 1/
2/ ACM #SIGGRAPH, a major conference and trade fair with up to 20,000 attendees, will take place in Vancouver next month, right in time for the peak of a COVID wave.
That means that probably 2000 people will return home infected with COVID.
3/ Of these 2000 people with COVID, a few hundred people will be knocked out for a few days or weeks.
About 1% might suffer from *debilitating* #LongCOVID effects - i.e. 20 attendees will suffer from a major illness for weeks or months or more.

Super happy to share our @siggraph paper with @nvidia "MatBuilder: Mastering Sampling Uniformity Over Projections" (@LoisResearch, @nbonneel, @dcoeurjo, JC.Iehl, A.Keller, V.Ostromoukhov) projet.liris.cnrs.fr/matbuilder/. The motivation is that to estimate the value of an integral [1/16]
we can randomly sample the integrand and sum values -- this is Monte Carlo integration. With "well spread" samples instead of naive random values, we can improve the accuracy of the integral estimate a lot -- this is the quasi-Monte Carlo method. [2/16]
For instance, we can use stratified samples: for example, if we want 16 samples to estimates a 2-d integral defined in the domain [0,1]x[0,1], we decompose the domain into 4x4 square cells, and we put one sample in each cell. [3/16]

We’re at #siggraph room 403A/B and to confirm, this is being recorded
A few requirements
1. Industry standards for interoperability
2. Simpler, more definitive file formats, e.g. make USD, GLTF, MDL more conveyable together losslessly
3. Open standards for the identity of people and social graphs, plus ownership of digital objects for economies
4. Standards for client/server comms & server/servers comms - single, huge shared world where everyone can participate together seamlessly.
Federated model, e.g., email vs decentralized model.
Don’t let this be obscured by blockchain hype w/ crypto! Blockchain in theory is good
