Today was never just about the rugby. There are South Africans all over the country, just like me, who don’t really know the rules of the game, or even who is in the team (besides for #SiyaKolisi obviously) who have shed a tear today because something happened that mattered.
And it’s so easy to be cynical (and believe me, I usually am), and no one is saying that this excitement materially fixes or undoes anything by itself. But there are details from today that are different, details that were missing from past moments (1995).
The acknowledgment of the country’s problems and inequalities, in the speeches and statements today, are so, so far removed from the misty-eyed 1995 fluff, and so, so much more useful. So much more realistic. It’s not glossing over issues. It’s putting them in front of the world.
