Reparations is now trending on Twitter, Teevee, and Facebook, for folks who are catching the train now, let's recapitulate some important elements of the history of reparations from my book Reparations for Slavery published in 2017. #slaveryarchive
"The gradual end of slavery in the western hemisphere during the long nineteenth century was planned to protect the interests of slaveholders and planters" #slaveryarchive
Laws gradually abolishing slavery in the north were often overestimated by scholars. "In 1777, the Constitution of the new state of Vermont did not free any of its small population of slaves" (p. 48 of my book Reparations for Slavery and the Slave Trade, 2017) #slaveryarchive

First panel of the #2018SHA (it's what's being used by the @JourSouHist) is the Hanger Memorial Panel on Belief, Belonging, and Blasphemy in the Haitian Revolution Era, featuring @JuliaGaffield, @DrEricaJohnson, Chaz Yingling, and Maria Cecilia Ulrickson #SHA2018
Matt Childs opens up by acknowledging the work of Dr. Kimberly Hanger, a past president of the Latin American and Caribbean Section and distinguished scholar of Spanish New Orleans / Louisiana. #2018SHA
I'm very excited for this panel, as some of these scholars I've known since our (very) early grad school days. #2018SHA

Thread. Last month I published an article about how resistance within slavery needs to be something we center in social studies classes
#historyed #sschat #socialstudies #slavery #slaveryarchive
It's in The History Teacher, but they don't publish online until 6-12 months after the paper copy, so - what with #SlaveryWasAChoice trending & last month's @splcenter @Tolerance_org survey & articles - I'm tweeting through it here
Basically, my argument is that we need to represent the PERSONHOOD of enslaved people - and that doing so means recognizing that *they resisted in countless ways* that go far beyond the narrow textbook renderings of self-liberation/escape & uprising (although those are important)
