Hey everyone, it is #SmallBusinessSaturday. Please visit your favorite independent bookstore, like, say, @wcfbook or @BookCellar, and buy a LOT of books. Thanks.
I mean obviously if you are not in Chicago then feel free to sub in another bookstore that is closer to you. Or you can drive to Chicago. Either way.
And if you are looking for something to pick up, may I suggest a beautiful and true novel about Eleanor Roosevelt and her little-known love affair with AP reporter Lorena Hickok.

The most effective thing we could do to support small businesses would be to introduce unconditional basic income. UBI would function as both venture capital for would-be entrepreneurs and consumer buying power for their customers.

This is also why over 100 CEOs in Canada have signed a letter urging the Ontario government to complete their #BasicIncome pilot experiment. UBI is good for business, especially small business.

Businesses need customers.

A common concern about UBI is how it would enable employers to pay less, but that would be a huge benefit to small family-owned businesses. Their workers could choose to accept less because they love working there, or to refuse to work unless they got more. #SmallBusinessSaturday

So in service of #SmallBusinessSaturday & localism, here's a thread of my favorite used & independent bookstores around the country, some thoughts on what makes them great, plus a few some observations on which communities are most strongly supporting book culture.
Before beginning, please note I haven't visited every bookstore in the country, but I have visited quite a lot. My criteria is strange and I've never quite put it all into words, yet perhaps it will become apparent to those familiar with some of these spots.
#30: Yes Books, Portland ME. A terrific mess of a store, my only regret is that despite multiple visits I'm still afraid to move around some of the piles of books which crowd the aisles. They're steep, the books are weird, the art bizarre, I like it very much.
