2/9 Last time UK houses were so expensive vs earnings was the year 1876

They were even more expensive previously…

What happened to change things? More houses, smaller houses, higher incomes.
3/9 Most people didn’t really benefit though, as over 75% rented at that time. Home ownership didn’t take off until 2nd half of 20th century.

Note the reversal post-2001. Home ownership becoming less attainable

📢Social housing providers would be covered by #FOI under a proposed amendment to the #SocialHousing (Regulation) Bill whose Commons committee stage starts today. The Campaign supports proposed New Clause 9 tabled by Shadow Housing minister @mtpennycook & drafted by @gmlawcentre
The Bill proposes a new and limited ‘access to information scheme’ for social housing tenants. The Campaign believes the more obvious and effective solution would be to bring social housing providers under the Freedom of Information Act.
This has already been done in Scotland, where registered social landlords were brought under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act in November 2019. @ICOnews has also called for registered social landlords in other parts of the UK to be made subject to FOI.

Thank you, Consul General @MichaelPostl & the delegation, from Austria who met with me yesterday to discuss building high quality publicly owned #SocialHousing that is affordable to all people in Seattle. This is the sort of housing provided to 60% all people in Vienna. 🧵 CM Morales and staff with delegation from Austria
We talked about the need for social housing as a new tool in our toolbox - especially in places like LA, SF, & Seattle, where rents have skyrocketed, displacement is rampant, & new construction of homes for working people isn't matching the pace of need.
Vienna was facing a similar problem when they started their social housing program, in 1917. Now, rents in both publicly & privately owned homes make up on average only 25% peoples' incomes in the Austrian capital, leaving them to have much more financial freedom & stability.

One of Labour's #TheLeft Radicals ambitions was to push #climatealarmism to the maximum 👇

1/ create distraction
Another Labour ambition, tear down society, rebuild it with Marxism perspective

2/ make noise
"Create A Crisis 'Use a Crisis As Opportunity' to change"

Labour Mayors/Councils have a habit of turning nice areas into rundown over populated, conjested places local people just want to escape from

2/8 UK homes have only been this expensive vs earnings twice in the past 120 years.

Things were even more expensive between the year 1845 and early 20th century.

What happened to change things? More houses, smaller houses, higher incomes. ImageImage
3/8 most people didn’t really benefit though, as over 75% rented at that time. Home ownership didn’t take off until 2nd half of 20th century.

Note the reversal post-2001. Back down near 64% now. Home ownership becoming less attainable Image

1/ The economic and social arguments supporting #socialhousing are strong, yet #GreaterManchester has recorded a loss of 47,000 (-16%) social homes across Greater Manchester between 1997 and 2019.

Recently, I was asked to give a seminar for @mhclg’s planners on the challenges faced by local authority planners delivering against the #climateemergency, because I work with lots of councils & I’m also Cabinet Member for Forward Planning at @CotswoldDC. So I know some stuff.
First up, I did the ‘we’re all doomed’ bit. You know, the rollercoaster graphs steeply going up and the even steeper graphs of how emissions need to come down.
Then I mentioned about how most plans are running for about another 10-15 years and they need re-writing immediately because most of them pay diddly-squat attention to the ‘what goes up must come down graphs’ from the ‘we’re all doomed’ bit.

"Are micro-houses the solution to Britain’s #homelessness crisis?"

No. British homes are not too expensive because they are too large.

If we allow homes to be built below space standards the land market will bake in the expectation of higher densities.

theguardian.com/society/2019/o…
The charities mentioned in this article are earnestly trying to find solutions to #homelessness today, but their assumptions are disturbing...
.@HomelessTHF says of its microhomes: "the unit has been valued at £80,000, proving the long-term financial viability of this approach as it will appreciate in value and become a valuable long-term asset for the charity."

This has been upsetting to read. Our most vulnerable people live in social housing, yet many are treated abysmally by the very people who are allocated the responsibility for their care. 1/10

Today, I will try my hand at live tweeting insights from "A #Home of One's Own", a two-day #researchworkshop on socially & economically #marginalised women's experiences of and negotiations with #genderinequalities in #informalurbanhousing in India.
This workshop has been organised by #JadavpurUniversity (School of Women's Studies), #RabindraBharathiUniversity (Centre for Women's Studies) and #Parichiti, a women's organisation. All three are research partners on a #GCRF project funded by @GoldsmithsUoL.
Since Oct 2018, I have collaborated with Dr. Henrike Donner, who is leading it, to develop #researchcollaborations with #educational and #development organisations in India to implement a pilot study on #genderurbanhousing. This workshop marks the end of the first phase.
