The thing that scares me most about social media like @Twitter is the echo chambers;

Don't get me wrong; I love the families that are created around #NFTs and other #crypto-projects;
i.e. I love following every @firatinsayfasi profile pic in circulation, and I love to see them into my newsfeed; I love to see it populated by @apa_nft, @MifutoMFT and others...

But I think it's something to weigh carefully;

But this is only part of the #bilby story. How did #bilbies behave once they were released into the Taronga #sanctuary, and did this affect overall success? To find out, we attached GPS devices & radio-transmitters to bilbies to track their movements post-release. #ScienceWeek
GPS devices collected incredibly detailed data on nightly #bilby movements, and radio-transmitters allowed us to locate #bilbies underground during the day. This track shows how bilby “Charlie” used the sanctuary just after release
Tracking data revealed hidden #bilby behaviours, such as their little-known social lives! It turns out that #bilbies have quite complex #socialnetworks and that bilby sociality may help explain some of the story behind their post-release success.

A thread about how well #China is playing the international game to become the most prominent economy in this decade, by @swardley.
@swardley Some key points about #China's long-run #strategy:

- For the #CPC (Communist Party of China) the #market is only a tool to leverage the power of the Chinese people, culture, and state, and not the holy sacred truth, as most western liberals believe. See @swardley's explanation.
@swardley - #China, through its CPC, acts as the #world's #biggest #buyer of goods & services, and hence, is able to impose its conditions (read law, prices, access to intellectual property, etc) to all multinationals that want to access the Chinese market, no matter how big they are.

Structural groups in social networks are often characterized by a high proportion of negative ties between them. Could negative ties help explaining the emergence and stability of groups? Our new paper in #SocialNetworks (with @aaavoros and Károly Takács)
sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
We argue that a number of positive social network mechanisms relate to group cohesion, most importantly the “big four”: reciprocity, homophily, transitivity, and popularity. But these forces of attraction may not be sufficient to explain group boundaries.
Between groups it is more likely that weak, neutral, or negative ties exist. A model that considers the co-evolution of positive and negative ties (forces of attraction and repulsion) could be better suited to explain the formation of groups.

"What is the #economy? I would argue that it doesn't exist in the physical world. It is a product of our #imagination. It is made out of #ideas. It does have an effect on the physical world. But the imagined order that we have is not succeeding."

Media that covers #Media #Publishing #Journalism #tech #SocialNetworks is often critical of traffic-driving algorithms, distribution of ad revenue, personal data collection/sale. Yet these writers have the ability to get users to force change. /1 notd.io/notes/56844813…
Most of the abuses that this sector of media is critical about come from internet giants, who pay lip service in response, because those abuses are very profitable, & regulation is unlikely in the US & users not motivated enough to change their usage of networks. /2
US regulation that would help stop the criticized practices is unlikely to help, mainly because Congress isn't qualified to design these regulations, so they would leave it to lobbyists working for the industry to be regulated /3
