🧂PSA - As a social worker, I see firsthand how #politics affects social policies and communities. If you're a politician who is interested in reviewing policy, learning more about #MentalHealth, or how to help the communities you represent - let's chat.
I am seeing too many statements from politicians about mental health and it's either inaccurate or woefully ignorant. Some of them want to be misleading on purpose but I challenge their opponents to increase their own knowledge and confidence when speaking on these issues.
Social workers are trained to look at issues from a holistic approach and can provide data-driven insights. We take an evidence-based approach & are held to a strict code of ethics. We're also great communication coaches.

Morning tweeps, I'll be honest, I spotted this report yday and ran out of time/energy/soul to cover it.

This is a report into a care home for learning disabled and autistic people 1.3miles from my house.

Its rated inadequate and I dread what we'll find in this report

1/25+ Front page CQC report into Burlington Care and Support Servi
Full report is here api.cqc.org.uk/public/v1/repo…

Everything that follows will be quotes from the report, I may remove the odd word to fit into a tweet, but it wont alter the meaning.

1/3 Meet Miosha Johnson, a MSW student interested in macro work with policy, advocacy & research! Her field placement is with @cmlibrary, working with the organization as a client, engaging with library leadership & providing evidence-based practice models of library social work. Image
2/3 Miosha, with the support of our Field Director Dr. Ticola Ross & the Field Office, initiated the first field placement at @cmlibrary. Library-based #socialwork is a new and innovative area, with library-based placements increasing across the country to meet community needs.
3/3 There have been just over 100 social work students in public libraries across the country for field placements within the last two years. Our School of Social Work, Miosha Johnson & @cmlibrary are on the cutting edge with this placement! swlibraryinterns.com/featured-colla…

As a Field Education coordinator I notice with concern, dismay and frankly perplexity the @AASW_ 's refusal to extend the Covid19 variations to the ASWEAS beyond 2021! Please reconsider 🙏...I explain why 1/
the far reaching impact of Covid and related restrictions will be felt well beyond 2022 by industry, students and social work schools alike. Exhaustion of staff, students and clients, reduction in programs and capacity to supervise students, social distance requirements 2/
will not magically disappear by January 2022. Most #socialwork schools already planned placements for 2022, it's a massive job and can't be done on a whim. Nothing will be like it was before #COVID19 3/

When multiple attempts to contact his local govt. authority went ignored, Hanumanth took the responsibility onto himself to clean up the streets of his village.
Having discovered that hoards of garbage littered his streets unchecked, he stepped out of his comfort zone and reached out to his local Panchayat authority to have it cleared.
Upon no response, Hanumanth planned a campaign with the children of his village who helped him and other volunteering community members clean up the garbage and dispose it.

Day 2 of #JSWEC2021 just starting, chaired by @JoWarner01. Impressive panel including Baroness Hilary Armstrong, @MarkDrakeford & @JulieMorganLAB. Apparently representatives of other parties were approached but unavailable. Says something about #SocialWork, society & solidarity?
Hilary Armstrong talking about how her experience of violence in her career in #SocialWork (interestingly including #CommunityWork), led her to look at the social causes, and then into politics. Informed her later work with the Social Exclusion (later, Inclusion) Unit. #JSWEC2021
Next up @MarkDrakeford. Ambivalent recruit to #SocialWork. Convinced by Bill Jordan that co-equal relationships with clients possible. Already a socialist, but became a politician because of cases stemming from poverty and deprivation. Same principles embedded in SW & his govt.

If anyone on #SocialWorkTwitter has a moment to help me, I would be so appreciative. #SocialWork #MSW (thread)
I have an issue that’s been bugging me for a while, but I recently contacted a professor to express my concerns related to a specific assignment. Now I have a meeting with the program director tomorrow (eep!)
It seems to be very common in my MSW classes to have an assignment that requires me to find either 1) a professional to interview 2) a person or group of people who are experiencing a problem to interview or observe or 3) a friend to pretend to be a client

In March, my friend, Nkiru and I published a 25-page chapter in the Handbook of Interpersonal Violence "Future Directions in Advocacy in Response to Interpersonal Violence" where we talk about policing, social services, and state + interpersonal violence. link.springer.com/referenceworke… Image
We wrote this before widespread calls to #DefundMPD and mainstream engagement w/ concepts of #abolition, but what I think this writing does is set the groundwork for why divestment from the state (including social services and any anti-violence programs that engage with police) +
divestment from the state is a mandate for survivor safety. policing is NOT an inevitability. state violence is not a necessary by-product of keeping survivors safe. we will never end sexual assault if we don't end the carceral state. Image

INCOMING RANT.

How can homeless advocates, who TAUGHT US that homelessness is primarily caused by poverty, send out newsletters about increasing funding for vouchers aka means testing and in-kind resources, perpetuating second class citizenship and welfare slavery.1/
POVERTY IS NOT A LACK OF HOUSING. IT'S A LACK OF CASH. Need housing? Build more housing. But DON'T sit there and tell me that if most people had money they would still be homeless. The data just doesn't bear it out. Breaking fucking news: @AndrewYang ran for president. 2/
He and the #yanggang made UBI mainstream, so we can stop propping up the human service industrial complex. Yes, we like working "with" people but there are plenty of traumatized people out there who need help BEYOND just proving their worthiness to @HUD and housing authorities 3/

The predicament I’m in: I’m definitely what MH professionals would call “depressed,” “anxious” and pretty much fit the diagnosis known as “PTSD.” But... the most traumatizing thing that has ever happened to me, I can’t talk about with a MH “professional...” 1/ #psychtwitter
8. Whenever I asked them if the meds could cause some of this, they always said no way! So I believed them. They would say things like “you’ll have to take them for the rest of your life,” “you’ll never have kids,” “you’ll never heal” or “finish school.”
10. You can watch part of the story of what happened here: basically I developed #akathisia & SEVERE #benzo withdrawal. I could barely speak for 4 months, had seizure like episodes, constant intrusive suicidal thoughts for 22 months, & so much more.

THREAD

I dove into the FEC data, and it's pretty clear:

Grassroots health professional donors far prefer Sanders and Warren to Biden and Buttigieg. 1/
For doctors, donations went mostly to Warren and Sanders, with Sanders slightly receiving more.

Buttigieg received a substantial portion.

Biden received very little.

@darakass @DrDooleyMD @AbdulElSayed @DrSriram @DoctorsforPete @Docs_4_Bernie To me this corroborates the polls which show that while medical trade groups/guilds/professional societies might not support policies like #MedicareForAll, grassroots doctors feel differently. 3/
