Hello #soctwitter & etc, if you're planning a first-day-of-class (or etc) introductions, and you want to be inclusive of trans/non-binary folks, can I suggest (as a trans professor with a lot of trans & non-binary students) including pronouns as *optional* rather than required?
+
Pronouns in go-rounds & on name-tags & etc are great in many ways, bc they signal "we don't assume anyone's gender identity/pronouns here" and also "we're trying to be inclusive of trans & non-binary people."

BUT they're also deeply uncomfortable for anyone not ready to share.
I would have hated hated hated them when I was a not-yet-out-as-trans college student, and when I've made pronoun-sharing optional & explained why, I've gotten a lot of appreciation from my trans & NB students.

I also dislike them now, though I appreciate the intent a lot.

THEORIZING PART #2

Given the interest in my previous thread, I decided to follow up with 12 additional resources on theorizing.

I've also included selected community suggestions from the previous thread.

Buckle up! 🧵⬇️

BOOKS

Swedberg - Theorizing in Social Science

An anthology and follow-up to 'Art of Social Theory'. Includes chapters by key thinkers such as Karen Knorr-Cetina, Diane Vaughan, Stephen Turner, Karl Weick and James March.

degruyter.com/document/doi/1…
Reed - Interpretation and Social Knowledge

A highly ambitious work in which Reed demonstrates how to construct 'maximal interpretations' - that is, historically specific and hermeneutically rich explanations of social phenomena

Sociology has seen increased interest in *theorizing*: the practical work of developing theory.

Having recently immersed myself in this literature, I decided to make a list of 20 of my favorite publications🧵⬇️

BOOKS

Swedberg - The Art of Social Theory

The most obvious reference on this list. Discusses every aspect of theorizing, from observation and naming to concept formation and explanation

Tavory & Timmermans - Abductive Analysis

Lays out the epistemological and methodological basis for 'abductive analysis', one of the more exciting approaches to theory-development

#soctwitter & #poliscitwitter - if you're teaching something of mine this fall, I will very happily Zoom into your class (or come in person if possible). I try to make most things I write, and all my speaking, accessible to & engaging for undergrads & everyone else. Some ideas:
I would LOVE it if folks teaching American Politics, Campaigns & Elections, Political Sociology & etc use some or all of Producing Politics. It's got:
- an accessible overview of what we know about campaign effects (ch 1)
- discussion inequalities in pol participation (all thru)+
- insights into what campaigns actually do & what it's like to be on one (all thru, but especially ch 2)
- discussion of the campaign staff "revolving door" & of where they go outside campaigns (ch 6)
& lots more, in a short affordable book. bit.ly/ProducingPolit…

Was asked to review this but have been putting it off. I am more worried about what it will say about me as a person and scholar than what I have to say about it. But I need a break this morning so here I go.

#soctwitter #BookTwitter #bookreview #bellah Image
Enjoying this biography of Bellah by Matteo Bortolini of the U of Padua. It's very well written for a sociologist, much less one who I assume is not a native English speaker. It is a full biography not just an intellectual biography.
TIL: Bellah's father abandoned his family and committed suicide, leading him to be renamed Robert Neeley. He was a competitive individualist in HS. And he served a year in the Army after he arrived at Harvard. Image

#soctwitter, I am reviewing an interesting paper using qual interviews. The authors often count statements etc (eg half stated x) to indicate salience. Yet the sample is not a random one. How am I to think about this (as an absolute non-expert on qual)?
Perhaps @JessicaCalarco @MarioLuisSmall would be able to give me some clues. Just saw that a book on qual literacy is forthcoming - I would be the first to buy that!

As some know, I teach a publishing course for grad students focused on articles. Here is some common feedback that I give on student drafts #SocTwitter: (1) The "lit review" needs an argument. The section should not be about "here's how widely read I am in topic X," but about 1/
"here's my argument about the prior literature that THIS paper addresses." This doesn't have to be a gap, but can be. (2) The front of the paper doesn't match the back end. That is, the paper sets up expectations for answers to questions that the data cannot answer. This often 2/
has to do with writing order or reusing proposals that describe the work for intro material. BUT can also be because the paper is a piece of a larger project and the front end talks too much about the larger context in ways that are not needed for the specific paper (common in 3/

So thrilled to receive my copy of @SarahDamaske’s The Tolls of Uncertainty. I had the privilege of reading drafts of this book and I whole heartedly recommend it for family, inequality, labor, and gender classes. @PrincetonUPress #AcademicTwitter #soctwitter 1/7 Image
Damaske’s book shows how the experience of unemployment, including the job loss, its consequences, the search for new work, and subsequent employment, are shaped by gender & class. As a consequence, gender & class inequalities are exacerbated by the unemployment process. 2/7
Women feel guilt for their job losses and make it up by sacrificing their health and wellbeing for their families and taking on extra household labor while men (particularly middle-class men) feel empowered to take time for themselves. 3/7

Sharing my comments on grant-writing (esp as scholar working at non-R1). Kudos to @mignon_moore & @mjonescorrea for organizing such supportive, informative conference. Apply to #PDSI_RSF next year! #soctwitter
- Your priority is to obtain tenure!
- Grants generate revenue for institutions. U may be pressured to chase grants but publications secure u tenure & applying for grants take time away from publishing
- Grant writing is riskier, higher stakes than article writing
There is a sweet spot for grant writing
- Too early: u don't have the body of work to be considered an expert
- Too late: why fund project if it is near completion?
- Eary juniors (<3yrs): seed grants, smaller grant geared toward junior scholars (i.e. RSF presidential awards)

1/ Why is "framing" and lit review so contentious in sociology? A thread for #soctwitter and assorted bystanders.
2/ Last week, our department had a very nice panel where faculty answered questions publishing. Panel included current/former editors/deputy editors of ASR, AJS, Contexts, Soc of Ed, SPQ and more. (Yes, our dept is super professional and service oriented).
3/ Most advice was simple and intuitive: keep revising, show your work, read the journal you submit to, take rejection in stride, accept the randomness of reviews, etc. BUT the discussion of framing and lit review was long and complex.

My new article "On Track or Derailed? Race, Advanced Math, and the Transition to High School" in @SociusJournal summarized in tweet form.

A thread:

journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
Taking advanced math in HS influences academic success, what careers we pursue, and how much $ we make. Studies find racial gaps in who takes Calculus in HS & Algebra I in MS, but there is little research on race and adv math course taking during the transition to HS. 2/
This study uses national data to examine adv math course taking in 9th grade for students on the accelerated track who took Alg I+ in 8th grade and students on the standard track who took <Alg I. I also look at the role of performance factors & parents, teachers & counselors 3/

Just had this thought after conversing with some fellow Black colleagues in academe about hostility we have (and continue to) face on the job. So, to my Black fam in academe, many of you work in units where the knees of white supremacy are constantly on your necks. They put...
put their knees on your necks because they know the structure in academe encourages and incentivizes anti-Blackness. Yet, some of those culprits who dare seek to block your joy and contribution will attempt to send calls of action to your unit listservs, etc., demanding...
that your dept makes a statement, or etc. Understand, you’re duty-bound to reject these overtures – they’re insincere and phony #NotWithMyName. Especially if these colleagues have yet to repent. Again, #NotWithMyName! Sometimes all we have left is our dignity, and we should...

1/12 How does #Demography impact #COVID19 deaths? In new pre-print, we illustrate how older population age structure can interact with high mortality rates at older ages to produce a large # of fatalities, as in Italy. osf.io/se6wy/?view_on… #poptwitter #epitwitter
2/12 #COVID19 fatalities are hitting older age groups hard. Case fatality rates for 80-90 currently 17.5% in Italy. While these numbers will hopefully be overestimates, the burden on older ages groups is frighteningly high.
3/12 With current concentration of deaths at older ages, COVID-19 deaths will hit older countries hard (Italy has 23% of population >65). Figure 1 compares Italy to South Korea (top) and Nigeria to Brazil (bottom) – two countries similar in size but different age distributions.

I need help: A friend is meeting with some teachers to discuss racial inequalities in middle and high school. They would like to have some studies ready to show the teachers the inequalities minority kids, esp. black boys, face in schools.
I'll be doing a search on my own, but would love the insight of experts who could point to 2-3 studies that make this point really well. Or to strategies that help teachers do better for minority students in these situations.

Thanks so much for any help!!!

Rejection letters & harsh reviews are wack, but they almost always provide us with clues on how to get better. Here’s a quick thread with some ways of dealing with rejection. 👊 #SocTwitter #AcademicTwitter #phdchat 1
Before I even click on the PDF containing reviewer comments, I tell myself a little mantra that is huge in jiu jitsu: “You either win or your learn. There is no losing.” It sounds hokey, but this mantra has helped me appreciate very critical reviews #SocTwitter #AcademicTwitter
Then, while reading reviewer comments, I look for the “fatal flaws” that got my work canned. Usually the issue is about theory choice, methods, or a mismatch between theory / data. I don’t get mired in little stuff...yet... #SocTwitter #AcademicTwitter #phdchat 3
