Thread/ #Wetlands may seem off-topic for an organisation based in #Africa's #drylands, but the protection & restoration of river ecosystems makes up a big part of our programmes at Tree Aid

2/When it does rain in the #Sahel, it often pours, leading to destructive flash floods, riverbank damage & #soilerosion. #Siltation is a major problem in the Sahel too, making rivers dry up quicker in the dry season, and flood faster in the rainy season too

3/ Our riverine projects work with local communities to restore & protect existing #trees along river banks, and adapt #farming methods to reduce siltation

Rivers & streams are a lifeline for these areas, and provide vital many services - read on to learn what we've been doing๐Ÿ‘‡

2/3 The 1-acre plot was earlier used only for mangoes. So black gram, a nitrogen-fixer, was sown on the unused ground. This ground crop acted as shelter for several reptiles, amphibians, insects, an #EcologicalBenefit
3/3 The ground crop also prevented #SoilErosion to a certain extent. In addition, the harvested black gram meant a profit. Related video about a farmer who has attempted #agroforestry

This thread is all about controlling #soilerosion in an Eco-way. Combined with water retention structures - it will also aid #Waterconservation. Erosion Control and water harvesting/storage are closely coupled wrt Watershed Management as well. Read! ๐Ÿ‘‡
Most of us know there are different stages of soil erosion
1. Splash
2. Sheet erosion
3. Rill
4. Gully
Gullies create wastelands. So it's very important to control Soil erosion at the initial stage. There are several ways - Vegetative means and through engineering structures.
Usage of Coir GeoTextile to control Soil erosion - Uttrakhand Forest Department carried out this Eco-way treatment of gullies at 10,000 ft in the alpine meadows. They used coir knit sheets to spread over the banks/bunds of the gully.

Work done by Sandeep Kumar IFS, UK cadre.
