Susanna's Song

Though once I thought myself the all-desired,
Now bloodless days do fill time's hourglass,
The silence echoes, dreams have not transpired,
As tortoise-slow the clockhands make their pass.
Left to imagination's dark device
My thoughts through lightless tunnels wander lost,
Stray orphans of a mind made imprecise
By absence of Love's saving Pentecost.
And failing that bright grace, what shall I own
But sunless days followed by truant sleep
Stolen by Jezebels unseen, unknown,
Leaving silence my company to keep.

The Fetch of Love

Ahead of dawn I wakened in a trance,
you holding me so close I felt your breath
as you so sweetly said, “Come, shall we dance?
I’ve brokered a short holiday from death.”
Your shining eyes caressed away the night.
I held your face and kissed it, unafraid,
as we entwined and tasted love’s delight –
the proof of all the promises we made.
But as the sun rose you began to fade,
dissolving in its light like so much smoke,
thus ending our too brief bright escapade.
Alone I rise, arrayed in daylight’s cloak.

The Blooming

You reached through time and space to touch my soul,
with gentle fingers healed the hurting there,
and I, with this repair, restored and whole,
accepted all the love you had to share.
And in the summer of your gaze I bloomed,
my petals soft unfolding in the sun,
the days and nights with sweetness all perfumed
as we that had been two now joined as one.
A love like this but once a lifetime comes,
a rare and precious gift given to few,
and in its presence all fair pleasance sums,
to be discovered every day anew.

Self Pity.

A dusty path,
But there are cleaner routes,
Yet, you chose to be soiled with earth,
Standing mocked before elites,
Your confidence muffled by a swathe of flies,
Your nose piling up unused water that dripped down your jaw.

You chose to be robbed of choice.
Ambiguity

The mother of errors,
Always unknown,
Muddling right in a wrongful way,
Pointing evil in an unstoppable direction,
It never meant harm,
But brings blood to the table,
How did it nestle all alone?
Waving to no-one in motion?

Invoking Morpheus

The night, of late, is nothing but a blank;
no dreams are surfacing on break of day.
Is this phenomenon something to thank,
or has all inspiration gone astray?
I do not wish for nightmares to invade,
but strange it is that nothing I recall
of hours spent in Morpheus's glade,
as if beyond the purview of life's scrawl.
Oh shine a lantern, daemon god of dreams,
illuminate the secrets of the mind,
that better I will see beyond what streams
while wakeful, and there understanding find.
