Review: Space Moms

Radha Bharadwaj’s Space Moms is a film that slowly draws you in and then engrosses you so completely, even though you know how the story ends.

After all, that image of saree-clad rocket scientists and engineers with gajras in their hair, laughing and crying at the joy of having successfully accomplished India’s Mission to Mars remains with us, forever imprinted thanks to our television and newspapers of that time.
The characters of the three women protagonists, who lead their teams of scientists and engineers, are etched so delicately and yet with such steely strength that the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary before our very eyes.

When @radhabharadwaj decided to tell the story of women in India’s space programme, she innocently started talking to Bollywood production houses.
Little did she know that Bollywood thrives on thieving ideas and scripts. 1/n

Her script was taken, idea stolen and without as much as a nod, a hackneyed version was produced by Bollywood behind her back.

Radha was not going to take it lying down. She proceeded legally against the producers while committing to produce her own script.

The outcome is #SpaceMoms , a wonderfully original take on the ordinary Indian women at ISRO who do extraordinary work.
It is a depiction of characters as they are, NOT as caricatures.
You know that Akshay being a scientist route, dont you?

Read this piece by @radhabharadwaj on #SpaceMOMs, the first feature film inspired by the women of #Mangalyaan. #Bollywood wanted her to dumb down her script with silly made-up stories about the ISRO engineers. Radha said no. theprint.in/opinion/with-m… via @ThePrintIndia
@radhabharadwaj @ThePrintIndia #SpaceMOMs accurately portrays the women of #Mangalyaan as people who respect the traditions of their Indic culture. #Bollywood didn't like that. In order to stay true to these women, Radha took her script and made #SpaceMOMs independently, mortgaging her house to fund it.
#SpaceMOMs is an underfunded underdog of a film, just like #Mangalyaan was an underfunded underdog of a mission. But the women of Mangalyaan proved underdogs can triumph over impossible odds. And the public wants a Mangalyaan film that is heartfelt, dignified, sincere, authentic.
