There used to be another one which was that it was ‘just the internet’ & ‘I’ve never seen it’. Then Gemma O’Doherty’s ACI thugs were filmed & photographed doing Nazi salutes, screaming at a Jewish woman & calling LGBTQI ‘perverts’ on Barrow St.
Thread: As we stand shoulder to shoulder at #SpeakersUnicorner on Saturday let’s look at the central ignorance of Fascists wanting to ‘take our culture back’. Such ahistorical nonsense ignores the survival of our way of life thru colonialism, wars, ethnic cleansing & famine.
There are lots of definitions of culture, ethnicity & nationality but I think it goes deeper than even those. In the early Irish Republic it was about the Irish language, rural society & Roman Catholicism. The ‘dancing at the crossroads’ trope.
This early vision gradually eroded under the undeniable fact that Irish people were part Scandinavian, Norman, English, Welsh, Scottish, Spanish & French & had different origins & perspectives. Dev’s so-called ‘Comely Maidens’ trope didn’t acknowledge our growing diversity.
Thread: I understand that some are puzzled by an Anti-Hate speech protest being symbolised by a Unicorn. There is a history of minorities taking the words used against them, making them their own, & celebrating them. For instance ‘Queer’.
Fascists have invented a ridiculous idea that Trans people symbolise themselves as unicorns in order to ‘convert’ children. If Fascists understood symbolism they might get the irony of that:
For the past few weeks The Far Right have taken over a Dublin Street. These same bigots have campaigned against Trans people & used the Far Right unicorn idea. They also said that the Street was Dublin’s Speakers Corner & invited people down to talk.
