I attended #WESELPA's Propaganda Fest at @CentralSD this past Thursday entitled: "Building Positive Relationships with Your School Community" - a training for parents led by Program Manager Anthony Farenga. It's was very troubling and just another way that the schools
think they own our children. I saw this in their core beliefs where Core Belief #1 was "teachers and parents have dreams for their students". I'm sorry but no teacher gets to dream about my child. They have no claim to their life and future. They need to focus on teaching them to
read, write and do math. Another Core Belief was "Families and Staff are equal partners". I at least wish this were true in the IEP meeting as it's supposed to be but it's not. School Admin bully parents and refuse to provide services that will actually benefit students with

#SpecialEducation #CrossSubsidy 🧵
The Minnesota legislature is failing our school districts, students and communities by not fully funding the required special education services our schools must deliver #mnleg @msba @amsdmn <1>
With an unprecedented $9.3 billion surplus this year, the Minnesota legislature should finally fully fund its obligation to special education in our state. To this point, the state has failed its obligation leaving Minnesota’s public schools with an unfunded mandate. <2>
Schools are forced to borrow from their general funds, taking dollars meant for general classrooms to provide these required services. Each year, this “cross-subsidy” for school districts grows and all of our schools and students suffer. <3>

@sunflowercyn @AmyfStuart @MommyGearest @TorontoStar Sadly, the #SpecialEducation portfolio is massively huge &the needs greatly outweigh funding provided. Every school board #budget cycle is like a mean game of Russian roulette being played with our kids' lives. #COVID19 merely succeeded in showing parents & teachers...

Thread 1/12 Here's a short video (sound on) that my wife & I made teaching our special needs son some of the things that he would be learning if in person learning were available for special day classes in r public middle school. #COVID19 #specialneeds #schoolsreopening
2/12 We made this video yesterday, because I was off from work and therefore able to help with the lesson. As you can see from the video, teaching Aidan takes more than one person. Most days I can't help. And so this doesn't happen. #SpecialEducation
3/12 When schools are open, he in in a classroom that has a teacher and many aids that help him and the other students. He also has special seats and chairs and desks that make this easier. At home, he has some 10-30 minute video sessions with a teacher. That's all.

For my new followers from this summer: I host a monthly twitter chat during school months called #GlobalSPED. It was born out of my trip to Bangladesh where I mentored some of that country's first Special Ed teachers. So, for half an hour Sunday night-we chat live.
Though #GlobalSPED focuses on teachers who work with kids with special needs, our topics, advice, and experience spread from general ed classrooms, Inclusive classrooms, every level of #SpecialEducation, home schooling and specialized schools. (more)
I should probably point out, that I'm the crazy guy/wizard behind the curtain making all the gifs-setting the tone. I just ask the questions, but the incredible information that #GlobalSPED teachers share will give you an incredible resource for your classroom/child.

Wtf?! This goes against the tenets of #disability studies, by critiquing #neurodiversity & making claims like “disability is not a ‘gift’ that anyone w/ an acute moral sense would give, celebrate, or fail to try to change in the direction of greater ability & less disability.”

Maybe I’m extra salty this AM but I feel compelled to respond. Over HALF of the citations in this article are back to articles published by the lead author. How is that even permissible? How is this original research or thinking & not just inflammatory self-promotional BS?

Talking about people in their presence hurts, writes non-speaking autist Rami Kripke-Ludwig. jweekly.com/2019/04/03/i-d…
Today's featured non-speaker is Cindi, who writes about the paradoxes of her autism: "This life of mine is hard just because I have autism. The thing is autism makes my life good too. My family wants it cured. I want it channeled for success." cindisblogtwo.weebly.com/blog/poem-and-…
Damon Kirsebom writes about frustration of being autistic and a non-reliable speaker. Do NOT assume that when his mouth repetitively starts chattering away about Thomas the Tank Engine (which happens often) that he is IN ANY WAY obsessed with trains. unitedforcommunicationchoice.org/damon-kirsebom…

Every person exhibits behavior. Everything we do is behavior. Everything we don’t do is behavior. Behavior is a form of communication. For nonverbal individuals diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, behavior may be their only form of communication.
I know this because I communicate with my six-year-old son based on his behavior, every day.
We take a clinical approach to his mental health all day, on a daily basis. We are constantly observing his behavior in hopes to figure out what he is trying to communicate to us.
He attends Applied Behavior Analysis therapy for 2 to 3 hours a day, after his full day of school. There, he is learning to learn, learning to be motivated, learning to follow instruction, learning to toilet himself. This is a list of behaviors that are innate to most people.
