One of my favorite lines in all of #StThomasAquinas's writings is a brief, poetic summation of his doctrine of faith. The line appears in Aquinas's hymn to the Eucharist, the "Adoro Te Devote."

"Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius."
("I believe whatever the Son of God has said.")
This line is inscribed above the front doors of the cathedral in my home diocese. I saw and read it dozens of times while growing up. Even before I learned what the Latin meant, Aquinas's faith and knowledge were shaping my mind and imagination. That's how the saints work.
Aquinas’s whole doctrine of faith is simply an extended unpacking of what he describes here: belief in the teaching of the Son of God. What is this act? What is required to perform it? What is its progress and measure? What is its end? What is its perfection? What is its failure?
