I'm beginning tweeting at the #wintersolstice

As I just explained, we just finished building a new monument, #soultonlongbarrow, which revives a prehistoric practice of building long barrows, not seen for 5,500 years

These are the first images of the new chamber ever shared ImageImageImageImage
Im going 2 explain more about what this is, and how it has been an important resource for our community in surprising ways in this challenging covid year, but for now, I just wanted to share a picture of the monument working with the #wintersolstice #sunset for the 1st time today Image
Now, I realise I need to expand aspects of the context for this happening.

Let's start around 5,500 years go, when the first farmers in the British Isles also found #architecture, which they do by building long barrows... Here's West Kennet in Wiltshire (📸 from resarch trips) Image

The main window behind the altar is in memorial of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. It shows Christ enthroned in majesty, reminding us that all earthly and temporal authority ultimately bows to Christ’s eternal majesty.

The second is on the south side of the church and shows the story of Jesus being presented in the Temple, the event we celebrate at Candlemas (2nd February). Mary and Joseph are there as well as Simeon and Anna.

At St Cadoc's, Llangattock Vibon Avel, when it came to stained glass, no expense was spared.
Every window in this medieval church bursts with Victorian vibrancy, with examples from some of the very best makers of the era.

Hands up who's ready for a stained glass trip?

Charles Eamer Kempe created the window in the Rolls Chapel: a four light line-up of superstar saints. But the luminous St Michael in golden armour steals the show. His wings shimmer with peacock feathers, and a blood-red creature - half man half beast watches from his feet.

Earlier in his career, Kempe crafted an orchestra of angels to fill the double tiers of the west window. They play under starry skies with a fantasy citadel behind them.
One angel plays the triangle, an instrument first documented in the 10th century.
