We spoke to @NationalWorld about what we think a compassionate, accessible and workable asylum system could look like – and why an approach based on hostility and deterrence is cruel, costly, and won’t stop refugees risking their lives to reach the UK to claim asylum. Image
Our policy and research manager @_tarapovey told @ImogenHowse that a compassionate system is one where people are believed, welcomed, and treated with dignity - and are able to start rebuilding their lives.

An accessible system is one where people can claim asylum without putting their lives at risk by crossing the Channel. It is completely legal to come to the UK to seek asylum so we have a moral and lawful duty to make it possible.

Husband just ran up to tell me Priti Patel has resigned. Said he'd assumed she'd stay in Cabinet as she's so popular with the Tory faithful.

Well, here's the thing...

🧵on what happens when you mix cruelty with short-termism (and why Patel's resignation may mean very little)
So, after the 2019 election, many of us in the refugee sector were worried. The Gov had apparently "got Brexit done" and needed to show they could limit immigration.

But they knew they couldn't reduce it to the levels they had been implying. They needed a scapegoat...

Jews escaping the Nazis were asylum seekers.

Instead of pandering to racists, bigots, & the far-right, the UK Govt should welcome asylum seekers with open arms - not whip up anger & hatred by demonizing them & those who help them.

Sadly, rabid intolerance - among both press & government - has a strong British pedigree.

The Daily Mail has been an 'anti-alien' newspaper since the 1900s - great continuity - & the Daily Express on the run-up to the EU referendum was utterly grotesque.

These antiquated, inhumane, & revolting attitudes appearing in our press & amplified by the UK Govt - especially the cruel & shameless Home Secretary Priti Patel - permeate British society & keep rancid ideas alive which belong in the dustbin of history.

Well, we’ve done some calculations of our own...

This is a picture of an item of the same value as the daily increase in Asylum Support.

We’re not trying to be funny – this is beyond a joke. A Freddo is genuinely one of the very few things you can buy for 26 pence.
Here are some other things that people seeking asylum could afford with 26p. Half a Bramley apple in Tesco, a third of a first-class stamp and half a pint of milk in ASDA.
