Hey y'all! I'm Naomi Ko and I am one of the organizers for the #StartWith8Hollywood initiative, which pairs female-identifying filmmakers of color with mentors, gatekeepers, and decision makers. I would like to share some insight into our program for transparency. 1/13
The program is ✨FREE✨. No participant had to pay anything. Nothing. The other collaborators (@BiatchPack @manondereeper @MarisildaGarcia @Cheryl_CLBP @shelbykovant #SunnyTsai ) matched and coordinated over 600 meetings as volunteers. 2/13
From our own personal experience we know that the price to APPLY (not even participate, which I will get to that in a bit) is a barrier for WOC filmmakers and artists. Again this program is FREE! We're being called "radical" for this, but it really should be the standard. 3/13

In 8 weeks, #Startwith8Hollywood has become the largest #DiversityAndInclusion initiative in the history of Hollywood and I'm proud to be a part of it.

Here's why this matters...

Before 2020, #Diversity programs at the studios & networks offered less than 10 spots per year for underrepresented creatives & crew to be mentored by those already inside the system.

Access to the access was nearly impossible.🔐

In 8 weeks, powered by just 2 volunteers, doors were opened for nearly 300 women of color. That's 300 talented, driven, experienced creators who had been shut out from their dreams.

This is holding Hollywood accountable. No more #LipService

It truly warms my heart to see all of the #Startwith8Hollywood tweets. WOC have traditionally been barred from the spaces where connections are made, where friendships and relationships built. It's why we always hear "we don't know any WOC we can hire", or "we can't find any..."
We are building towards organic diversity: if everyone knows 8 WOC in their field, they can make those recommendations and personal referrals when someone gets asked "do you know any...?"
And this is already happening. Mentors are making referrals. This is huge!!
We are so grateful for how the mentors have embraced this program and how seriously they are taking it; we specifically didn't provide instructions or templates because we wanted the mentors and mentees to talk as people. Figure out what they can do for each other.
