In January 2018, the Federal Government through the Minister of Defense, Mansur Dan-Ali, blamed anti-open grazing laws in some states as the cause of the killings by herdsmen.
Briefing journalists, Dan-Ali argued that the remote causes of Image
farmers-herders crisis is the take over of cattle routes by communities, thus denying the herders resources and space.
“If those routes are blocked, what happens,” he asked?
In September 2020, Buhari reechoes the view.
What should we do?
What is cattle route?

HE WAS THE SCOURGE OF THE CONGO

Mobutu Sese Seko (1930-1997) was the Scourge of the Congo. He was a military officer who connived with the West to murder Congo’s first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba in 1961. He became a darling of the West following his role in the killing. Image
In a second coup in 1965, he overthrew the government of Congo and ruled the country until he was forced out in 1997. He governed with brutal arbitrariness as he changed the name of Congo to Zaire. He killed those who opposed him without blinking - a cold eye murderer.
When the going was good, the United States and Zaire now the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) led by Mobutu, challenged the Soviet Union’s influenced communism in the horn of Africa. Mobutu had access to American weapons and CIA’s intelligence reports on African states.

They told us that one of the northern governors is the commander of Boko Haram in Nigeria. Boko Haram and the bandits are one and the same. They have a sophisticated network. During this lockdown their planes were moving up and down as if there was no lockdown. They were moving

WASTEFUL LEADERSHIP

Africa is replete with wasteful leaders. The late Omar Bongo (1935-2009) of Gabon was one of them. As of 2008, Gabon, a country with an estimated population of 2 million had a debt of 2.4 billion dollars courtesy Bongo. He lived an ostentatious life. Image
In the midst of grueling poverty, he had 66 bank accounts, 183 cars, and 39 luxury properties in France. In 1999 it was discovered that he starched more than 130 million dollars in the private banking unit of New York Citibank.
Bongo in concert with his friends in the West borrowed 4 billion dollars for a failed railway project in Gabon. A large chunk of this amount found its way back to European banks.
Gabon remains one of the poorest countries in the world due to the character of its leadership.

A NEW NORM: LIVING THE LIE

By Prof Francis Egbokhare

We are in an era of social media saints and market place experts. We pounce on people without caution, strip others without conscience.
The failures of others trend, the shortcomings of the weak give us kick.
We appear addicted to the pain and suffering of other people who we criticise and condemn without pity.

I think we should have an opportunity to make mistakes without being afraid; fail without being condemned.
We should say sorry and be forgiven, be punished but experience redemption. We should be able to ask foolish questions in the course of learning, fall and be helped up.

NATIONAL SECURITY: WHY POLITICIANS FAIL

According to Harold Lasswell politics is the power to determine who gets what, when and how much, meaning that power is about the allocation and distribution of resources.
The values behind the distribution of resources determine if a country is developed or poor. In Nigeria the commanding values of disunity and deceit overburden the state. These are values that deny the person peace of mind, leading to a rat race as the state belongs to nobody.
The politics of the moment can only exacerbate the chaos of poverty and violence as it is not politics to serve the common good.

Highlights:

*Buhari’s refusal to sack defense chiefs has worsened the security situation of Nigeria
*Politics is about survival and interest

Ideas rule the world. Advanced and emerging economies having hugely invested in education, generate ideas that shape global politics and economy, thereby deciding world affairs.
Nigeria is yet to partake keenly in this global market of ideas.

It is about stepping up.
Democracy is meant to solve the problems of failing health and education sectors, weak infrastructure, pervasive poverty, crime and frustration. When it compounds the condition of the people, it is not a government for the people.

THE DANGEROUS SILENCE OF THE OPPRESSED

From 1999 when the fourth Republic took off, opposition politics only became heated with the consolidation of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the South West, not because the party was different in character from opposition Image
platforms like the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), but due to its coordinated and sustained attacks on the policies of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the national level.
The ACN in its deployment of media messages in opposing the policy direction of the Jonathan
government created a charged political atmosphere likened to a sea wave. This was seen in the intensity of the debates that created Occupy Nigeria protest in 2012. Though not the kind of opposition to serve the common good, yet it laid bare the failure of leadership.
