Tonight, @JoeBiden will be delivering the #StateOfTheUnionAddress. He will try & frame gun owners as problematic & firearms as more than tools of self-defense. He will try & frame gun control as a win, but we know better & GOA will fight every gun control proposal Biden proposes.
@JoeBiden .@JoeBiden starts his #StateOfTheUnionAddress by thanking @LeaderMcConnell for their "bipartisan victories," AKA the gun control McConnell helped get passed. 🙄
Republicans working with @JoeBiden to pass the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization is just one more examples of @SenateGOP negotiating your gun rights away!

Normally I wouldn’t preemptively post a response to the response to the State of the Union, but after reading Sarah Huckabee-Sanders’ remarks on Republicans in a “culture war we didn’t start and never wanted to fight”…ma’am this was nearly a *year* ago

Michigan proved that people are tired of politicians trying to convince them that all their problems are somebody else’s fault. Stop attacking trans kids and start putting up actual plans to help people. Governing is hard. Scapegoating is easy. And hate won’t win.

Racist Sunny scolds people who don't like the State of the Union address, suggesting they are going against the Constitution by not listening to it.
FACK-CHECK: False; presidents used to just send a letter to Congress about the state of the union.
Sunny says she wants Biden to "talk about education" because schools are "not teaching history." (FACT-CHECK: False)
She also wants Biden to give a solution to the "politicization of the Supreme Court and what we're going to do about that."She demands leftist policy proposals.

Ahead of the #StateOfTheUnion, lets take a look at Californians' views of the US and President Biden & what has changed since he first took office.

There have been noticeable shifts in not only approval & confidence but also in the overall mood & economic outlook for the US.
Looking at approval, while slim majorities of adults and likely voters still approve of President Biden, there has been considerable change since 2021 including 20+ point drops among women, African Americans, Latinos, and Californians in households with incomes under $40,000.
Fewer than half now express a great deal or a good amount of confidence in President Biden to make the right decisions for the country's future. Confidence only eclipses a majority among Democrats, those in Los Angeles, & African Americans & fell 20+ points among women & Latinos.

As @POTUS gives his #StateOfTheUnion address tonight, we'd like to share our own #SOTU.

Here are five ways we'd like to see the promise of democracy become real for us all in 2023:

[thread incoming🧵] A CLC-branded graphic that ...
1/ Protect & expand the freedom to vote ahead of #Election2024.

This is one of our most fundamental rights, and our democracy is strongest when every voter can participate in it. We're very much still fighting anti-voter laws in court & taking on barriers to #VoterRegistration.
1b/ Meanwhile, in the absence of federal voting legislation, we're very encouraged by the passage of State Voting Rights Acts (aka State VRAs). We hope to see more of them introduced this year.

Navin Nayak: I think overall the State of the Union speech was a strong moment for Pres. Biden. He touted the successes of the last year & talked about how much there is yet to do. He reframed Build Back Better as lowering costs for families.
@amprog @CAPAction #StateOfTheUnion
Navin Nayak: Pres. Biden laid out the provisions of Build Back Better without saying those words.
Rick: I've been saying for a while he needs to lose the catch words & explain how it would make people's lives better.
@amprog @CAPAction #StateOfTheUnion #SOTU
Navin Nayak: Another powerful moment was the young boy in the audience & reminding people we can do something about lowering drug costs & capping insulin costs at $35/month. What a savings that would be for people who depend on insulin.

Rick: I imagine that you & your staff must have been dancing to hear Pres. Biden talk about Buying American, Made in America.
Scott Paul: Yes! This was the core of the economic message.
@ScottPaulAAM @KeepitMadeinUSA #StateOfTheUnion #SOTU
Scott Paul: I appreciated the way it was framed: Building jobs AND building resilience. They have a plan for Buy American, and they have a person who's in charge of implementing the plan. I like the policy & the values.

Scott Paul: I'm from the midwest & I hate hearing it referred to as "the Rust Belt." I was pleased to hear Biden address this. It's the industrial heartland. Intel is building a factory in Ohio; it's where jobs of the future are happening.

I have just finished watching the #StateOfTheUnion address, and it became clear about half way through why the mask guidance was changed by @CDCgov.

Beautiful speech, but also very sad in that one respect.
There is a “War on COVID-19”. It’s still raging on, but today there needed to be some sign that America has gained some ground in that war.

Sadly, that ground gained was the loss of mask guidance. Seen as a symbol of the fight, the shield was discarded.
There were many other things that I really liked about the planned COVID-19 response. The access to testing and medication. The access to respirators for vulnerable people… vaccination efforts, globally.

Who's about to watch #StateOfTheUnion?

What do you expect?
I don't know about you all, but I can't believe it was just a year ago that that fascist fuck Trump was droning on forever at the 2021 #StateOfTheUnion. It feels like it's been 10 years already.
A pandemic--and hello, it is not over--will do that to you.

I will be watching the #StateOfTheUnion tonight and I’m wondering if the speech writer has an equivalent to “Axis of Evil” that (and fuck that phrase) will be used by the US to capture this moment.
There’s a fucking global pandemic still. A lot of us who are saying fuck imperialism of all kinds and who obviously oppose the Russian invasion of Ukraine are being yelled at to fall into line if we don’t say exactly what we’re supposed to say about #UkraineRussiaWar
And some of us come from places the history of which is rife with the debris of the West vs Russia/USSR imperial enmity. And so many other historical empires. We say fuck off to US and Russian imperialism and increasingly today also Chinese imperialism.

In his first #StateOfTheUnion tonight, President Biden is expected to urge Congress to act on parts of his Build Back Better bill, which has stalled since Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said he'd oppose it. Manchin won his election in 2018 by .3% of the vote. trib.al/y6EJ6rG Image
Other Congress members have gotten their jobs with even smaller margins of victory, like Republican Iowa Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks' 6 votes. Her win reduced Dems' advantage in the House to 9 seats, limiting how aggressive Biden can be with his agenda. trib.al/gFo03FB Image
In Florida's 2018 Senate race, if 1 of every 2,000 Rick Scott voters had chosen incumbent Bill Nelson instead, Democrats would have a 51-49 advantage, and Biden's climate and social spending initiatives wouldn't rely on Manchin's support. trib.al/pcwiA06 Image

In @POTUS's #StateOfTheUnion speech tomorrow night, one of the things I'll be listening for is whether President @JoeBiden asks Congress to pass solutions to address congressional stock trading. President @BarackObama made a similar ask to Congress 10 years ago. 1/5
When we elect our representatives and send them to the U.S. Congress (assuming you aren't a resident of Washington, D.C. and don’t have full congressional representation but should!), we want them to make decisions in our best interest — the public interest. 2/5
After all, that’s what we are paying them to do. If we wanted someone to make decisions for the benefit of their own stock portfolio, we might prefer to send them to a stockbroker or financial adviser, not Congress. 3/5

President Biden's #AmericanJobsPlan looks to increase the federal corporate tax rate to 28%, which would raise the U.S. federal-state combined tax rate to 32.34%, higher than every country in the OECD, the G7, and all our major trade partners and competitors including China.
While President Biden’s #AmericanJobsPlan emphasizes making goods in America, the tax increases will raise the cost of production in the U.S, erode American competitiveness, and slow our economic recovery.

According to Congressional Budget Office and Tax Foundation modeling, tax increases on corporations are among the most harmful options to pay for the increased spending.
