Around March and December 2020, there were 580,000 more deaths in the EU than during the same time in 2016–2019. During the early stages of COVID-19's spread, excess mortality in the EU peaked in April 2020,
with a 25% increase over the average of the same month from 2016 to 2019. Between May and July, there was a decline in excess mortality, but with the second wave of the pandemic, a new increase in mortality began in August and September.
In August and September, excess mortality in the EU was 8% higher than the average, 18% higher in October, and 41% higher in November, followed by 30% higher in December.

A look at many supermarket shelves suggested it, now there are also official figures. A special evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office showed that, before the partial lockdown in November, consumers again hoarded toilet paper,
disinfectants and baked goods, but did not stock up on the same quantities as in spring. The sales of toilet paper in the week from October 19 to 24 were more than twice as high (+139 percent) as the average of the pre-crisis months August 2019 to January 2020.
In the last week of October 2020, however, the increase was 84 percent less. The sale of disinfectants had also recently increased and at the end of October it was more than double the pre-crisis average (+104 percent), according to the statisticians on Thursday.
