If officials don’t start acting immediately to shrink the size of jails and prisons, many more people are going to get seriously sick or die in the weeks ahead—and many more communities, and eventually all of us, are going to face many more additional risks for community spread.
More community spread, of course, then will add to more illness and death. And none of this is to mention the additional stress jail and prison outbreaks will put on already overburdened health care systems. We must #StopCOVID19inJails.
The same is true for other vulnerable populations that aren’t getting as much coverage, including those in immigration detention (ICE needs to stop raids now and immigration court needs to stop now) and the unhoused.
