#stopthecuts 1/16

Germany is when the government announces >10% budget cuts and there is no critical debate, let alone real resistance. The extent to which austerity is depoliticized in 🇩🇪 is equally singular and dangerous. #stopthecuts
If you look at the press release, it’s truly awful.
👉 cuts described as a way to ensure „fiscal capacity“ - even though they are the exact opposite.
👉 cuts as „clear signal“ in fight against inflation. As if unemployed scientists reduce gas prices.

bundesregierung.de/breg-de/suche/…
👉 Touting „record investments“ but pointing out they are mostly de-risking private investments. Thus increasing corporate welfare while we urgently need better public infrastructure.
👉 All this described as ensuring „permanent growth“ when it’s literally procyclic austerity.

Dear students,

As members of the University and College Union, @ucu, we have unfortunately had to take the very difficult decision to strike on Monday February 22 and Tuesday February 23 2021. We are striking because UEL plans to make four members of academic staff compulsorily
redundant, beginning next Tuesday. These staff include 3 @UEL_EduandCmty lecturers: Prof @Andrews77Molly Prof @Gargi_at_home @CorinneSquire and @jilldanielsfilm. The 4 staff who are made redundant also include the Chair and Vice Chair of our @ucu branch.
This year @UEL_News saw 6% student increase yet it has pushed out 88 staff through voluntary redundancy; workloads for remaining staff are very large, at a time when our students need more support, not less.

So much of these negotiations/strike talks have been focused on numbers - specifically, 1% or 2%. In reality, that’s not even the focus of what teachers are fighting for. In order to highlight why I am striking, I wanted to provide some other numbers that are meaningful to me.
3.5 - number of years I’ve been teaching in the same grade, same school
102 - number of students I’ve taught in these 3.5 years
6 - number of students I’ve taught with complex medical needs that I’ve been responsible for meeting while at school (epilepsy, diabetes)
5- number of epileptic seizures that have happened in my class
27 - number times a diabetic student has had their numbers drop below 4.0
