#SC21: @HPC_Hyperion #HPC Market briefing (without the breakfast this time 😉 )

Despite Covid, #Fugaku single-handedly saved the HPC revenue numbers for 2020 - a billion dollars makes a difference!
@HPC_Hyperion .@HPE is the top #HPC vendor, followed by @DellTech

@Fujitsu_Global jumped due #3 due to #Fugaku - so this is their 15 minutes of fame :-)

@InspurServer & @lenovo make up the Top 5

#SC21
@HPC_Hyperion The broader on-prem #HPC market

#HPC #storage remains #2 after compute, which is the biggest item as usual

This work session at the @PUCTX is starting now. I will tweet about the discussions throughout the day on this thread.

#energytwitter #txlege #txenergy
They begin by delaying a decision on HCAP, the $9000MWh price cap until they've decided on ORDC (Operating Reserve Demand Curve) as the two are related. Their analysis of ORDC change impacts is not ready so they will hold off on any decisions on either.
Long discussion here of ORDC. Cmsr. Glotfelty asks What is ORDC for? What problem are we trying to solve? Cmsr. McAdams makes the point that ORDC can incent distributed generation and demand response like at @HEB and @bucees. Talks about varying cooling load for freezers

Long🧵on the provisions of #BuildBackBetter on all things #electricity & #grid. The act starts w/ ~3bn in loans for electric co-ops @NRECANews, incl. projects w/ #batteries. Co-ops have been very involved in @ENERGY-funded R&D & are now enabled to bring results to practice! 1/
It is funny that in my postdoc work @CMU_ECE & @NRECANews w/ @eeregov funding, we actually studied the added value of #battery to #photovoltaics for residential customers' energy cost savings: energy.gov/eere/solar/pro… & [1],[3], [4] here panay1ot1s.com/publications-s… 2/
Another ~10bn to co-ops for loans until 2031 to improve #resilience & #reliability w/ investments in #renewables & #transmission . Co-ops 'own' transmission lines & this money can motivate adjacent upgrades. Also critical that #renewables & #transmission appear together here! 3/

Watching @NetAppINSIGHT keynote? Me too. Here are my quick thoughts. A 🧵

#NetAppINSIGHT /1
IMO, #NetApp was the traditional on-premises #Storage vendor that moved faster to the #Cloud. They created the #DataFabric vision a few years ago and are delivering value today.

#NetAppINSIGHT /2
With ONTAP services available on #AWS, #Azure and #GoogleCloud, I can compare what #NetApp is doing with #Storage to what #VMware is doing with virtual machines: providing existing customers an easier path to #Cloud migration.

What are the economics of increasing variable #renewable energy (VRE) sources and electricity #storage in electricity markets?

@WPSchill and I try to explain it in the @AnnualReviews of Resource Economics 🧵:

annualreviews.org/doi/full/10.11…

#energytwitter #econtwitter

1/20
Wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) will be the main sources of electricity by 2050, accounting for almost 70% of global electricity generation, according to the @IEA Net Zero 2050 scenario.

iea.org/data-and-stati…

2/20 Image
Wind and PV are variable: they only produce when the resource is available.

Solar always produces more in summer than in winter and only by day peaking at noon.

Wind is more location-specific, e.g. it produces more in winter in Germany and in summer in California.

Texas' energy woes will persist, and costs will be higher, unless demand side resources like #energyefficiency and #demandresponse, #solar and #storage, are deployed at scale. Alison Siverstein wrote a great piece in @UtilityDive about this. A quick 🧵

utilitydive.com/news/fix-texas…
Silverstein is a former FERC & PUC staffer w/ decades of energy experience. She wrote that Texas policymakers and the @PUCTX and @ERCOT_ISO need to "shore up grid reliability by aggressively managing electricity demand, not just throwing money at supply-side measures." #txenergy
She writes that over the last decade TX population increased 16% while energy use increased 20%. Much of that increase is driven by inefficient homes & buildings. We have #energyefficiency programs in Texas that deliver savings at 1 penny per kWh. Try to buy energy for that!

How much could heat pumps earn selling wholesale grid services? I estimate $25-100 annually per nameplate electrical kW from regulation + synchronous reserve in PJM. A typical home's central air-source heat pump could earn $75-300.

#electrifyeverything #energytwitter #heatpumps
Not huge revenue, but enough to cover aggregation/instrumentation costs within a couple of years. A heat pump aggregator may be able to provide these services alongside others, like demand response curtailment, voltage support, or energy price arbitrage. 2/
These estimates are for reversible variable-speed air-source heat pumps, which both heat and cool, so can provide grid services most of the year. Revenues will be lower for heating-only or fixed-speed (on/off) units. Source is a forthcoming paper. 3/

#SB3 and #HB4492 conference reports are filed. I'll add thoughts to this 🧵as I go through them over the next hour or so.

#txlege #txenergy
#SB3 Headlines:
- Weaker gas regs (House version) are IN the bill.
- Most egregious anti-renewable language is OUT of the bill.
- one minor #demandresponse provision kept IN the bill
- #energyefficiency and most local power gen/storage backup OUT of the bill.
more details soon
Conf report kept House language that required gas supply to be mapped by the Electricity Supply Chain Mapping Committee before any regs are created. Cmte report due 1/1/22, @txrrc rules 6 months later. There will be no gas regulations required before this coming winter.

A lot going on today/this week on storm response. A quick 🧵 on what to look for this week:

#txlege #txenergy
Today on the House floor, #HB2000 by Huberty to create the State Utilities Reliability Fund, a loan/grant fund for weatherization of infrastructure, will likely come up. It was scheduled for last week but postponed. Huberty was arrested last Friday and was absent. Now he's back.
At 3CT, ERCOT and the PUCT will hold a Summer Preparedness Workshop. We could see very tight conditions and possibly outages this summer if extreme heat and drought occur.

The new @BerkeleyLab compilation of utility-scale #solar data and trends is out! A briefing slide deck, data file, maps, and data visualizations can all be found at utilityscalesolar.lbl.gov.

Here are some highlights → THREAD
More than 4.5 GW of utility-scale (>5 MW) solar came online in 2019, bringing cumulative capacity to 29 GW. Projects are spread across all 10 regions that we track, though more heavily concentrated in the sunniest regions. Maps and data available at utilityscalesolar.lbl.gov. 2/x
The median installed cost of new projects in 2019 fell to $1.4/W-AC, down 20% from 2018 and more than 70% from 2010. 77% of projects and 88% of capacity added in 2019 used single-axis tracking. More details in the new @BerkeleyLab data resource at utilityscalesolar.lbl.gov. 3/x

🧵🧵 ⚡️NEW STUDY RELEASE⚡️ 🧵🧵

Colorado can reduce electricity cumulatively save $1.8 billion by 2040. At the same time, it can grow the electricity job market by 70,000 and reduce GHG emissions by 75% from 2005 levels.

@holycrossenergy @IREAcoop @DrChrisClack @achoukulkar
It can do all this by:
1) Coordinating transmission planning across Colorado;

2) Designing transmission tariffs and access spread across Colorado;

#transmission Transmission topology between utilities and cooperatives acr
3) Ensuring all utilities and cooperatives join the same Energy Imbalance Market (best for whole US is when all CO joins the WEIM);

4) Deploy wind, solar, and storage throughout Colorado;

5) Sell the excess Coloradan wind and solar to other states in the West.

1/ Hi #energytwitter, I'm excited to share my thoughts on the changing role of #electricity #storage in the #renewable #energy transition in my new @Joule_CP Commentary! @CellPressNews 🔋

doi.org/10.1016/j.joul…

A little thread ⬇️
2/ I discuss three strands of the literature, and illustrate how the main driver for (bulk) electricity storage deployment shifts from taking up renewable surplus generation to supplying peak residual load when the renewable share increases (and what changes with sector coupling)
3/ I do so with residual load duration curves (RLDC) from a stylized #opensource model. The RL in one hour is the electric load during this hour, minus the potential generation of variable renewables. A RLDC sorts all hourly RL values of a full year in descending order🤓

This big breakthrough from @RishiSunak is to be welcomed unequivocally as a stimulus measure - & for #NetZero too, provided it becomes a piece of a larger puzzle, a #GatewayDrug to next-level #decarbonisation and credible #COP26 presidency - THREAD (1/11)

🧩 rented homes: my reading is that private landlords will be able to access the voucher scheme, but lets see. Social housing has a £50m pilot - I think this will kick off the £3.8bn Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, but let's see. (2/11)
🧩 jobs: safe to say we want the 120,000 jobs from this to be around for more than a year. This is a big number and more will be needed - let's think how these can be folded into a #justtransition, which includes ending #fuelpoverty. (3/11)

#BeyondHeadlines: There are not-so-obvious global reasons why the #OilMarketCrash is NOT good for #India.

Heavy #QE/ currency pressure + Intense #geopolitical tension

= #India, importer & friend to all oil producers, in the crosshairs.

Thread on these impacts of #OilPrice 👇 Image
US #oilprice crashed negative for the 1st time in history. West Texas Intermediate (a US crude) traded as low as -$40.32 a barrel. So far the bulk of the losses are in US crude, -200 to -1000%! Global (Brent) crude has not gone down as much because global storage still exists.
#COVID19 #lockdown has sharply cut all travel & thus demand for oil. Excess supply of oil resulted in a shortage of #storage space, esp in North America. As they & slowly the rest of the world run out of storage, the demand for future oil contracts (futures) goes down sharply

Great event and panel put together by @livemint @UtpalBhaskar converging diverse views from financing, #fossilfuel generation, #energytransition #technology and business operations in the #electricity value-chain! 1/n
As Power Minsiter @RajKSinghIndia rightly said, problems of capacity and #energyaccess has been solved, and the next problem to be solved is reducing #India's #carbonfootprint - #electrification of #mobility and #cooking is one pathway.
Increasing domestic and international demand for #electricity will lead to more #RenewableEnergy capacity installation; new connections and usage will ⬆️domestic demand, integration & #export (neighbors inc #Myanmar #SriLanka) will ⬆️cross-border demand, which India can supply.
