1/6 It's important for businesses to be aware of the rising energy costs. According to the World Bank, the cost of energy is expected to be 46% higher on average in 2023. This can significantly impact your business finances
#EnergyEfficiency #dellemc #powerbill
2/6 One solution to reduce energy costs is to adapt energy-efficient #servers. A study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that a typical server in a data center uses an avg of 200 watts of power, resulting in an energy cost of $731/yr /server
3/6 By implementing more energy-efficient #servers, businesses can reduce energy costs by up to 80%. For example, replacing an older server with a newer, energy-efficient model can lead to substantial energy savings

[1/🧵] I've been reading a lot about #XRPL #scalability recently.

Let me quickly go through how #XRPL performs and #scales on these metrics:

▶️ Scale up "vertically"
▶️ Scale out "horizontally"
▶️ High volume & High value TX
▶️ High value & Low speed Source: https://ripple.com/insights/building-a-more-sustaina
[2/17] 👉 Asynchronous TX speed—Scale up "vertically"

In contrast to #DAG-based systems, which operate in "chaotic order" and execute transactions in parallel, the #XRPL validates transactions in canonical transaction order—one Ledger at a time.

❓ The approach for #DLT/#Blockchain-based systems such as #XRPL:
☑️ "Payment Channels"

🧐 It's a sophisticated feature for transmitting "asynchronous" #XRP #payments that may be broken into extremely small amounts and paid in total order afterwards.

Let's explore about the business model of the #shippingindustry! Shipping is a vital part of the global economy, with goods being transported around the world by sea, air, and land.
The business model of the shipping industry is centered around the movement of goods from one location to another. Shipping companies charge fees for transporting goods from one port to another, or from one country to another. #maersk
The shipping industry has a number of different business models, depending on the type of goods being transported and the mode of transportation. For example, #container shipping is a popular business model for transporting large volumes of standardized cargo.

Let us take a look at $TWST and some #Synbio.

Twist is the #DNA company. They break themselves into 4 different segments with #Synbio, #NGS, #Biopharma, and #Storage.
The first segment is Synthetic Biology. This is what I call the Mail Order DNA business. Many companies need DNA for developing therapies like cell engineering or gene therapies. Many of these DNA strands can be synthesized for just a few cents per base.
This won't be a huge money maker as they can ship hundreds of thousands of DNA sequences a year for just a few dollars per. It is the back bone of their sales, and its still growing nicely. Its the cash cow that will fund the future developments which can be big winners.

🧵#Iron
The most important factor in how much dietary iron you absorb is not whether it is heme or non-heme, plant🌱or animal🐮 - it is your current #iron #status.
If you are iron #deficient you may absorb 25% from plants, if you are iron #replete you may absorb less than 1%. Image
#IronStatus (is your body low in stores?) is the main factor determining how much iron you will absorb from your diet🌱🥩. The body doesn't want too much so high absorption ONLY occurs if your #storage is #low. The body is smart🩸🧠🫀🫁💡! Image
The body is very good at recycling #iron from dead red blood cells.
Only 5-10% of our iron needs come from our #diet🍽️

Regarding 100% renewable electricity systems, prolonged periods with persistently scarce supply from wind and solar resources have received increasing academic and political attention. Our article explores how such scarcity periods define energy storage requirements.
We contrast time series analysis with system cost optimization model, based on a German 100% renewables case study using 35 years of hourly time series data ➡️ Much more data than in usual energy system analyses

ZBF release finally draws closer (zero2050usa.com). We have been working to get the data/report out & understandable. Here is a short thread with some interesting observations that we made. First, here is a cheat sheet for our scenarios (a wide spread of possibilities)
First, we find that scenarios have huge amounts of #wind & #solar. We also find that deployment rates for these (& #storage) must dramatically increase to reach our goals (with and without novel generation).
This becomes increasingly important for limited technology cases & huge for #storage in terms of energy capacity.

Watching @NetAppINSIGHT keynote? Me too. Here are my quick thoughts. A 🧵

#NetAppINSIGHT /1
IMO, #NetApp was the traditional on-premises #Storage vendor that moved faster to the #Cloud. They created the #DataFabric vision a few years ago and are delivering value today.

#NetAppINSIGHT /2
With ONTAP services available on #AWS, #Azure and #GoogleCloud, I can compare what #NetApp is doing with #Storage to what #VMware is doing with virtual machines: providing existing customers an easier path to #Cloud migration.

What are the economics of increasing variable #renewable energy (VRE) sources and electricity #storage in electricity markets?

@WPSchill and I try to explain it in the @AnnualReviews of Resource Economics 🧵:

annualreviews.org/doi/full/10.11…

#energytwitter #econtwitter

1/20
Wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) will be the main sources of electricity by 2050, accounting for almost 70% of global electricity generation, according to the @IEA Net Zero 2050 scenario.

iea.org/data-and-stati…

2/20 Image
Wind and PV are variable: they only produce when the resource is available.

Solar always produces more in summer than in winter and only by day peaking at noon.

Wind is more location-specific, e.g. it produces more in winter in Germany and in summer in California.

Texas' energy woes will persist, and costs will be higher, unless demand side resources like #energyefficiency and #demandresponse, #solar and #storage, are deployed at scale. Alison Siverstein wrote a great piece in @UtilityDive about this. A quick 🧵

utilitydive.com/news/fix-texas…
Silverstein is a former FERC & PUC staffer w/ decades of energy experience. She wrote that Texas policymakers and the @PUCTX and @ERCOT_ISO need to "shore up grid reliability by aggressively managing electricity demand, not just throwing money at supply-side measures." #txenergy
She writes that over the last decade TX population increased 16% while energy use increased 20%. Much of that increase is driven by inefficient homes & buildings. We have #energyefficiency programs in Texas that deliver savings at 1 penny per kWh. Try to buy energy for that!

How much could heat pumps earn selling wholesale grid services? I estimate $25-100 annually per nameplate electrical kW from regulation + synchronous reserve in PJM. A typical home's central air-source heat pump could earn $75-300.

#electrifyeverything #energytwitter #heatpumps
Not huge revenue, but enough to cover aggregation/instrumentation costs within a couple of years. A heat pump aggregator may be able to provide these services alongside others, like demand response curtailment, voltage support, or energy price arbitrage. 2/
These estimates are for reversible variable-speed air-source heat pumps, which both heat and cool, so can provide grid services most of the year. Revenues will be lower for heating-only or fixed-speed (on/off) units. Source is a forthcoming paper. 3/
