#StoriesFromKarnes: Maria* is from Haiti. She’s detained with her husband and her son.

Doctors say we need healthy diets to ensure we’ve a strong immune system but her son has stopped eating because the food is so bad.

Here’s what she told us:
“Whenever my son eats the food here, he always seems to get a stomach ache afterwards so now he does not want to eat anything.”

Her son has lost 2 pounds since they were detained, and the doctor told them it’s not a big deal.
Detainees are even made to buy water: “We even have to buy water here, using the little money that we are able to earn while here, because the water quality is not good and the water out of the tap here gives our son a stomachache.”

Today, amidst the #COVID19 crisis, we bring back our #StoriesFromKarnes series in an effort to shed light on the inhumane & downright cruel situation migrants are facing while locked up during an epidemic of this magnitude.

We'll tell new stories until ICE agrees to #FreeThemAll
Over the next few days we'll be sharing with you a series of chilling accounts from families detained at Karnes to illustrate the gravity of the situation.

This is one of our clients, Maurice's*:
As a Haitian asylum seeker, Maurice* is locked up with his one year old son & pregnant wife.

They are scared.

Karnes might be empty right now...
The women once locked up in there, separated & taken around the country to hide the truth behind what went on there.

But we know what happened and we'll continue to share #StoriesFromKarnes until we #ShutDownKarnes.
tw: suicide 👇🏾
ICE and GEO weren't able to provide adequate medical care for adult women.

What makes us think it'll be anything different once they re-open Karnes to families and children?
We're working with the amazing team at @TXCivilRights to highlight this next story. 👇🏾

We feel it's one of the most crucial to tell because it shows just how far ICE and GEO's actions (o lack thereof) can go.

Last wk we revealed that @GEOGroup, who run the Karnes ICE detention center, aren't providing women in custody w/ proper medical care.

This wk, conditions haven't improved.

Instead women tell us that ICE is moving them to rural detention centers to fill Karnes w/ children 1/x
Despite support to #ShutDownKarnes from @SenKamalaHarris, @ewarren, @SenSanders, @RepAOC, @RepLloydDoggett, @JulianCastro, @RepEscobar, & @AyannaPressley.

ICE refuses to budge & continues to:

1. Not provide proper medical attention
2. Plan to bring children into unsafe condns
But we know there's ONE thing that ICE simply can't ignore.

And that's the voices of the women inside. The women they've mistreated.

They would prefer if you didn’t hear these sworn testimonies.

They would prefer if you didn't hear the #StoriesFromKarnes

We're continuing our series of #StoriesFromKarnes this evening but please take note: the story we are about to share is devastating and the baby is currently very ill while locked up.
The dad has been detained at the Karnes detention center for 21 days with his 1 year old son.

He came here from Honduras after a gang threatened to kill him.

Here's what he shared with us today:
"My one-year-old son has had diarrhea every day since we arrived to Karnes. It has been over 21 days of non-stop diarrhea. It is a serious cause for concern when a one-year old baby has had diarrhea for so long."

BREAKING: Today, we filed a complaint w/DHS on behalf of families at Karnes.

They've been detained for 41-58 days. Kids are supposed to be held for 20 days MAX.

Their detention is completely illegal. They must be released immediately. #StoriesFromKarnes raicestexas.org/2019/03/13/rai…
All but one of these families are STILL IN DETENTION, meaning the administration continues to violate federal policy w/each passing day and these families continue to suffer.

We've been telling their stories under #StoriesFromKarnes & will keep doing so. They're horrendous.
One father has been detained w/his 15 y/o son since Jan. 14—58 days.

His son is "sad & desperate." He hasn't spoken to his mother or sister in ages. He's been eating less.

Both have positive torture/persecution findings.

DHS hasn't told us why they're still imprisoned.

We’ve got clients in Karnes who’ve been there 20+ days & report poor conditions.

We will share #StoriesFromKarnes every day until they are released.

We ask you to share these stories and call on @ICEgov to release the families in Karnes without further delay.
Our first story is from a man who traveled here with his son.

In his words, he tells us how he got across the border and what happened when he was first detained by CBP.
“I left the shelter to see what was around and saw that the river was close by. I noticed that there was a group of people by the river... I crossed the border through the river, but the water only came up to my waist. I carried my son so that he wouldn’t get wet. “
