INTRODUCTION

Storyboarding is hard.

Really, really, REALLY hard.

Twenty-Five years ago I went in for a job interview at Klasky Csupo for a character design gig and met with Mitch Watson - a producer for their new show, “The Wild Thornberrys”.

PITCHING A CARTOON SHOW

By John Fountain

CHAPTER 8 - Post Mortem

Let’s talk about pitching a cartoon show, shall we? Image
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve tried to give you all of the practical information I have based on my experience on how to pitch a cartoon.

Not as easy as you thought, huh?

Everything I know came from trial-and-error on my part.

You will try.

You will error. Image
Don’t let it eat you up.

One of the major, emotional milestones I wish I had gotten over sooner is that - as corny as this sounds - life IS, in fact, all about the journey - not the destination. Image

PITCHING A CARTOON SHOW

CHAPTER 7 - “We’d like to see MORE!”

I’ve spent a lot of time preparing you for disappointment.

And rightfully so. The odds are undeniably stacked against you.

But - let’s say you pitched your show, everything went great, and a couple of weeks later, you get the call everyone hopes for:

“We’re interested.” Image

PITCHING A CARTOON SHOW

By John Fountain

INTRODUCTION

Let’s talk about pitching a cartoon show, shall we? Image
Before we get started, let me sort of lay down how this is all going to happen.
I’m gonna do my best to give you some perspective on how to go about pitching and/or selling your original ideas to a network or media platform based on MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Image
Why do I put those words in BOLD CAPS, you ask? Because my experiences are unique, personal and potentially outdated. I haven’t REALLY “pitched” anything in over a decade - and that should tell you something right there. Image

Ah! More #storyboarding tips for #scicomm!

Ditch the academic writing structure, it is passive voice, and so actions are usually backwards. You need to describe actions linearly, and then you can get more creative once you have that structure.
Step 1: Translate your content into an action outline, then add drama.

Step 2: Identify your character, and characteristics and environment. (The RBC was a tireless worker, carrying oxygen to and fro.)

Step 3: Add the problem or the call to adventure.
(But one day...
there was little oxygen to be found at the alveoli depot! What was going on? How would the little RBC do her job?)

Step 4: You've hooked me, tell me more! (Well, there was an obstruction. The RBC held on to more CO2 with all her might, and pushed on...)

Step 5: Zoom out...

Ahhh #storyboarding! Will touch on this a bit later this week! But a teaser...

Don't worry about the hero's journey first.
Start with a #narrative timeline:
1. Who is your protagonist? Immune cells?
2. Antagonist or supporting players? Bacteria?
3. Define setting...
(1 of 5)
... where are you? The lungs? (maybe start with a wide angle, then zoom in, and in).
4. Define your problem. Bacterial infection spreading!
5. Counter action. Immune system attacks!
6. Overcoming, or reaction. Bacterial infection shrinks?
7. Wrap up ...
(2 of 5)
... call to action? moral? "That's how..." explainer

Basically, the thing to remember with animation, #1 mistake is writing out of linear time order. Unlike text, your timeline is more rigid. Can't see the immune cells attack until that character is introduced to us.

Ello! Me again :) I've been wanting to do another #storyboarding thread on some techniques to simplify the #filmmaking process -- to help answer that ever-nagging question: WHAT SHOT COMES NEXT?
Let's start with the first idea here: "SHOT / REVERSE SHOT." You might actually hear this a bit more in live-action filmmaking. But what does it mean exactly? I really like this definition from joe940 on Slideshare. plus adding my paraphrasing:
so let's back up & imagine you *IRL* are observing a conversation - to follow along, your eyes naturally move back and forth between the two ppl as either one speaks, or lingers on one as they react in an interesting way or as they take a moment to ponder...

so i think the MOST important job of a #storyboard artist is not creating dynamic angles or cool images, but shooting scenes & telling stories with a POINT OF VIEW!

Who are we following? Whose eyes do we see the story thru? [a thread] #feboardary ImageImage
@looseyliu ofc, it's important first to know WHOSE STORY IS IT? (you usually find the answer by asking, 'which character experiences the most change'?)

as we break films apart into smaller pieces, that question then becomes: whose SCENE is it? or whose SHOT is it?
@looseyliu maybe the 'cheapest' way to put the audience in a character's POV is thru voice-over, and it's generally pretty effective in how directly it affects ur experience of a story - the character is telling you exactly how they see it!

I started doing this Storyboard guide ! I wanna cover A LOT of ground, so I'll upload an "episode" (or trick) per week or something..... here we go, THE WAY OF THE MASTER CHEATER ep 1 out of...... A LOT ???? ImageImageImageImage
ep 2 ..... I might go over it and explain more in depth, but how much flat screen surface you allow to a character/object is how I decide of 80% of my shots ImageImageImageImage

Sharing the #storyboard guide I created as Supervising Director for Craig of the Creek's 1st Season! Made with the show's specific qualities in mind, but full of universal info that can improve any storyboard. Any Q's, feel free to ask or email! #BlackLivesMatter #blackartists ImageImageImage
Important to mention these "rules" are suggestions that have worked well for me + many other pros, and can of course be broken at appropriate times for effect! Feel free to disregard or disagree w/ whatever clashes with your process. All the same, I hope you find it helpful!
I've been lucky to work on Steven, Craig and many other shows making progress in the industry by hiring more women, POC, non-binary + queer artists than most. It improves the shows' authenticity, quality + makes for a *consistently* more open workplace.

Eventually something goes wrong for Donald Duck.

After a long day of cutting hair, this kid tries his patience.

We all know how much patience Donald has.

#LegendoftheThreeCaballeros #Storyboard #DisneyPlus #Disney
He thinks he’s so clever when he looses his temper.

Angry Donald is the most fun to draw.
Donald would have stabbed that kid with the scissors if the kid didn’t duck out of the way.

I remember realizing that when drawing it, and chuckled to myself.

Donald Duck is late for work.

His boss isn't happy.

But Donald clocks in and gets right to it.

#LegendoftheThreeCaballeros #storyboard
I wasn't sure at first how I was going to have Donald cross the line of kids, so I came up with that gate gag.

It also serves as a moment for Donald to feel guilty in front of his boss.
Donald is a jack of many trades, but not really an expert of any.

He’s a good barber when he puts his mind to it, but something will tick him off.

Hint: It’ll be in my next post.

medium.com/@rat9/backbone…. I want to be an enabler to spread #comic culture. I want to build a platform that enable people socially to produce and consume comics. There are plenty of arts graduate those who don't know to connect various step from.. Image
I am thinking about establishing #Comic pipeline. Demand for Content is increasing. Comics are the foundation of content because they are used as #storyboard for #movies, #advertising and #series. So I am thinking of a way to ease the #story #writing by usage of template and #AI
based #softwares. Something that speed up the concepting of #MentalModel of #protagonist and antagonist #characters. With lower in broadband price, establishment of home grown content channels like #Hotstar, #Zee5, #Voot, #Sonyliv, #Jio #TV, #AmazonPrime etc, the demand of
