This Labor Day let us remember that when labor unions first held strikes, Black people were not allowed to participate, as they were barred from unions. Image of two Black healthcare workers smiling. The text read
However, Hattie Canty, a culinary worker, led the longest labor strike in American history in 1991. As the president of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, she and others walked off the job at Frontier Hotel over unfair labor practices.
Today, tens of millions of essential workers are on the frontlines and at risk for COVID-19 every day. With a majority of at-risk workers being Black, we want to take the time to honor those who sacrifice for their selves, families, and communities.

This wildcat strike by NBA and MLB players is what will defeat Donald Trump. It frankly does more to undermine all that Trump and the RNC stands for than anything the Democrats have done. And it expands the conversation beyond what’s comfortable to Biden Republicans. #NBAStrike
And now the news breaks that MLS players have joined
The WNBA is striking too. google.com/amp/s/www.ther…

Many people have asked why farm workers are joining with the @Mvmnt4BlkLives and other worker and racial justice allies tomorrow. My thoughts on this are complex yet so simple:

As a movement, we’ve learned that righteous protest relies on genuine solidarity.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. sent a telegram to Cesar Chavez in 1966, early in the 5 yr long Delano grape strike. "Our separate struggles are really one—a struggle for freedom, for dignity, and for humanity.”

Chavez carefully followed King’s career beginning with the 1955–56 Montgomery bus boycott. Two key UFW strategies were borrowed from King: nonviolence, which both King and Chavez learned from Gandhi, and the boycott, which had never before been used in a major US labor dispute.

BREAKING: @BurgerKing workers are ON STRIKE after Angela Martinez Gómez, a trans co-worker, died after working with COVID-19 symptoms

BK denied Angela died of COVID, despite having symptoms.

BK blamed Angela’s death on hormone injections without evidence.

#TransLivesMatter
Angela Martinez Gómez was 42 years old and was originally from Oaxaca, Mexico. She was a leader and loved by her family and community. Burger King exploited her for her labor until her final days. That's how companies like @BurgerKing and @McDonalds make billions of dollars.
Angela Martinez Gómez taught us to fight for our dreams and to be ourselves.

Today we honor her in silent protest and fight for safe working conditions.

Her family is raising money for her body to be transported back to Oaxaca: gofundme.com/f/in-loving-me… #TransLivesMatter

If in fact we are going to take on police violence that kills, then certainly we have to take on economic violence that also kills.

Today, I stand with #StrikeforBlackLives #ShutDownSTEM. I hope you join me in taking concrete actions for Black lives in our labs, our departments, our universities, and our communities beyond academia. Image
Things on my agenda today:

- research Black scientists to diversify my syllabi and invite for seminars

- solicit book donations from faculty to start an equity library

- ask uni and scientific societies to release demographic data as a first step in accountability
I’m also going to work with colleagues to start putting together resources about how to diversify our faculty in ways that don’t just end up perpetuating anti-Black racism. (What are the barriers, what would it take to get an opportunity hire approved, etc.).
