(2/4) This bank provides agro-machinery -- such as Mulcher, Happy Seeder, Bailer, Zero Drill and Roto Seeder -- at a nominal rent to manage crop residues, particularly #paddy #stubble.

They endorse it too. I even gifted my daughters a machine known as Happy Seeder that cuts the old crop and sows the new seeds.

How did Punjab fare w.r.t #paddy #straw burning this year !

This year burnt area is 14.88 lakh hectares Vs 14.17 lakh hectares paddy acreage burnt till Nov 20, last year

This year the total area under #rice cultivation in #Punjab is 30.29 lakh hectares, nearly 4.5 lakh hectares is under basmati rice, while the remaining 25.79 lakh hectares is under paddy. Farmers mostly burn paddy areas as basmati stubble is used for making fodder for the cattle.
Out of nearly 26 lakh hectares of paddy area, #Punjab has already burnt #stubble in 14.88 lakh hectares (57% of the paddy area and 48% of the total rice area in the state) till now. Around 3 lakh hectares (20%) of paddy acreage was burnt in just 5 days from November 14 to Nov 18.

While in ex-situ method of #paddy straw management, the straws are collected manually and through baler and rake machines after chopping them with other available machines and can be used for 11 different purposes.

#Stubble burning continues because of the short window between paddy harvesting & wheat sowing in #Punjab.

This method, propagated by Punjab Agri University will lessen the cost of stubble management & wheat sowing by three to four times as compared to the conventional method, experts said, adding that it can – if put into effect – halt the paddy straw burning in #Punjab like anything
‘Surface seeding' in which paddy harvesting & wheat sowing are done at the same time, an attachment is fitted with the harvester which broadcasts wheat seed & fertilizer at the time of paddy harvest, followed by a single operation of cutter-cum-spreader (3 - 4 inch above surface.
