As a follow-up to a thread on the #GunābādīNiʿmatullāhī order and #ShiiSufism some thoughts on Maʿṣūm ʿAlī Shāh (d. 1926) the famous 'historian' of Sufism 1/
His father Raḥmat ʿAlī Shāh (d. 1861) came at the end of a scholarly lineage of #Niʿmatullāhī Shaykhs: Muḥammad Jaʿfar Majdhūb ʿAlī Shāh (d. 1824), Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn Shīrvānī Mast ʿAlī Shāh (d. 1838), and Raḥmat ʿAlī Shāh himself all of whom had good relations at court2/
Majdhūb ʿAlī Shāh was closely linked to the traditional seminarian philosophers in Isfahan and Tehran and wrote a scholarly polemic against Henry Martyn (d. 1812) called Mirʾāt al-ḥaqq ar.rasekhoon.net/mashahir/show/…مجذوب-علي-شاه 2a/

#SUFISM A DRUG?

After destroying Persia, Mesopotamia and Egypt, in seventh century Arabs encountered a new kind of kafir resistance.

Hindus like Nagabhatta, Bappa Rawal, Takshak, who would neither convert nor die, instead they k*ll when asked to convert.
But they also have no fixed ritual of worship, and worship Gods in all forms, mostly animals , and love to sing and dance when worshiping God.

They also very highly revere their ancestors and worship them.

So the believers quickly changed the tactic and #Sufis were born
Sufis who apparently worship graves, and sing and dance while doing so.

All three are explicitly banned in Islam, and even today are banned as soon as Muslims seize political power in a country (Please find out how Taliban ruled Afghanistan in 1990s)

Just finished listening to @bdaiwi_historia's interesting conversation with @WQuisay of the #politicaltheology of contemporary Sunni #neotraditionalism
@bdaiwi_historia pressed @WQuisay to locate the source of the "traditionalism" in today's "neotraditionalists". IMO, it is neither #kalam nor #fiqh both of which produce deep "activism", so deep in fact, they have engendered conflict, as a historical matter in #MuslimHistory
I would locate their discourse in the #tazkiyatalnafs (self-purification) tradition of sharia-minded #Sufism. This kind of discourse is highly-compatible with a certain kind of #secularism that promotes the #privatization and #depoliticization of religion.

One of the leading figures of French #islamologie in modern times was Louis Massignon (1883-1962) chair at the Collège de France on #Islam and whose name is forever associated with the study of Sufism and an #empathetic study of #Islam 1/ ImageImageImageImage
In fact his turn to faith before WW1 followed a trip to #Iraq in 1907 and encounter with Muslim hospitality and spirituality reawakened his #Catholicism along with the #intercessionary friendship of Joris-Karl Huysmans (1838-1907) and the hermit Charles de Foucauld (1848-1916) 2/ ImageImage
After his own doubt, De Foucauld became a Trappist monk living in Morocco, Syria and then in the Algerian Sahara with the Tuareg when he was martyred in 1916 and is currently in the process of being canonised by Pope Francis vaticannews.va/en/vatican-cit… 2a/

#Ertugrul, aka Turkish #GameOfThrones is an epic TV serial @DirilisDizisi premiered @trt1 in Dec 2014, is now the latest sensation in Pakistan. The series is by far one of the best, based on Muslim Oghuz Turks and #ErtugrulGhazi, father of Osman-I who founded the Ottoman Empire. Image
#ErtugrulGhazi is debated in Pakistan vastly in favor. The rejectionists hv declared it a 'threat to the local film industry' while the left-leaners hv blamed Pakistan's 'identity-crisis' with the Turks & Arabs although the story is based on Islam & d purported chivalry of Turks.
#DirilişErtuğrul is a phenomenal amalgam of art & history that can potentially inspire generations with its powerful visual message on Islam, justice, peace, chivalry & courage.

Some of the reasons why #ErtugrulGhazi has resonated so well with Pakistanis are threaded below. 6/6

Today’s public service announcement: When you see a poem or saying attributed to #Rumi in which he is reported as saying: “I am not a Muslim”, or “I belong to no religion”, it’s probably fake.
A short thread on fake Rumi poems.
#mevlana #mawlana #masnavi #sufi #sufism #fakeRumi
One of the popular fake poems attributed to Rumi is the one that starts:
“What is to be done, O Muslims? for I do not know myself.
I am neither Christian, nor Jew, nor Magian, nor Muslim.”
چه تدبیر ای مسلمانان که من خود را نمیدانم
نه ترسا و یهودیم نه گبرم نه مسلمانم
The same poem has become so popular through its further re-translations:
[I am] “Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu
Buddhist, Sufi, or Zen.
Not any religion or cultural system.”

A lot of discussions recently about works that present an inaccurate view of Islamic spirituality. I wanted to share a thread on accessible and accurate English primary sources on #Sufis, #Sufism #Islamic #spirituality.

The Egyptian philosopher ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Badawi (1917-2002) is perhaps one of the most underrated thinkers of #ContemporaryArabThought - a major #Heideggerian_existentialist #Sufism and #IslamicPhilosophy specialist who studied at Fuad I (later #Cairo) University 1/
Many of us who study #IslamicThought know him for his editions of #ArabicAristotle #ArabicPlato #ArabicPlotinus as well as editions of the work of #Avicenna #IbnSabin #SiwanalHikma and others - without his efforts we would not have editions of the #PlotinianaArabica 2/
In the 1930s he studied in Cairo and obtained his PhD in 1944 supervised by #AlexandreKoyré (1892-1964) on the notion of 'existential time' that engages with #Heidegger - this like his other early works was published by #DaralNahdaalMisriya 3/

This intriguingly titled book on the #Shii nature of #IbnArabi is by Muhammad Hasan Vakili (b. 1980) a young mullah based in #Mashhad who defends Sufism and is associated with the school of #HusayniTihrani #ShiiSufism 1/
mhva.ir/about/ his own bio on his site makes major claims for him as a heir to the school of #HusayniTihrani which convinced him to go to the #hawza in #Mashhad 2/
Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Husayni Tihrani (1926-1995) is one of the more interesting and prolific writers on #ShiiSufism especially his biography of the Karbala based ‘mystic’ Sayyid Hashim Haddad (1900-1984) and on his own teacher ‘Allama Tabatabai (1899-1981) 3/

There is no difference between the positions of ulema and Sufi mystics on the issue of war or jihad. ‘Sufism’ on the whole is hardly outside the mainstream of normative Islam on this issue, as on others.
Let me dispel 4 myths about Islamic mysticism. The first myth is that there is a wide gap between the activities of the mystic khanqah and those of the scholarly madrasa (and that there is, thus, a vast difference between ‘Sufi’ Islam and normative/mainstream Sunni Islam) #Sufism
The 2nd myth is that mystics are ‘passive’, apolitical and withdrawn from the political affairs of their time. This is not true at all. In particular, check the activities of the Naqshbandis, Qadris and Chishtis. #Sufism
