The resumption of #Saudi-#Iran relations has triggered what I believe to be exaggerated reaction about #China’s emergence as a #MiddleEast powerbroker and a strategic shift of #Riyadh away from its traditional partners. 1/17
Some context: in an October meeting in #Jeddah, a #Saudi leader at the highest level explained his strategy was to defeat #Iran through growth. The fact that KSA is the fastest growing G-20 country, w/trillions invested in everything from tourism to mining, supports this. 2/17
But growth takes time - and growth can be sidetracked through insecurity, whether from #Houthi missiles or the threat of nuclear blackmail. To protect the long-term strategy, he said, KSA needs security. 3/17

How the 🇮🇱Israeli defense deals with the threat of #Hezbollah's precision missiles.
PART 2 — (24 tweets)
#Iranians in #Syria: Three key issues were at stake: the establishment of the Iranians and their emissaries on Syrian soil, the indoctrination of the Syrian people through Shiite clerics who had been flown from Iran, and the takeover of the Syrian arms industry. 1
#Syria has a well-developed arms industry, the result of #Russian knowledge and years of local development in favor of the Syrian army arming itself in preparation for a future war against Israel. 2

The "launches" to the campus, the monitoring of the improvement efforts & the #redline that must not be crossed in the quality & quantity of armaments: this is how the 🇮🇱Israeli defense deals with the threat of #Hezbollah's precision missiles. 1
israelhayom.co.il/article/855465
This is probably one of the few threats that the Israeli public is not fully aware of. A significant strategic threat, which could lead #Israel to launch a pre-emptive strike, even though the pretext is not nuclear weapons. This is also the hottest issue: #Hezbollah missiles! 2
Immediately after the 2ed Lebanon War, ignoring Security Council Resolution 1701, which imposed a full #embargo on arms transfers to #Hezbollah, Hezbollah embarked on a huge logistical op, with billions of $ in #Iranian funding, equipped with tens of thousands of rockets. 3

Shame on @POTUS to go ahead and appoints pro-Mullahs @Rob_Malley as his envoy on #Iran.
What a disaster

#Biden has handed the keys of the levant and Yemen to the Mullahs
nytimes.com/2021/01/28/us/…
Yes, there is no better “for the Mullahs” to appoint their favourite man in DC.
Knowledge is dangerous when ideological outlook is in sync with American enemies.
Triumphant #Zarif, standing next to his Turkish FM,
sensed @POTUS’s soft approach
and laying his Mullahs masters terms and conditions.

Crazy suggestion:

If a team of armed Iranian operatives had covertly entered Israel & killed its top nuclear weapons scientist, world leaders would not be "mum"

In fact, every single Western leader would have denounced it as a despicable, evil act of terrorism

Oh well...
Note: objective of #Fakhrizadeh assassination appears to be to provoke violent response by Iran, which would serve as pretext for war.
Israel (Sharon) did something very similar to justify invasion of Lebanon in 1980s
THREAD
Also: if the US or ISR have the right to assassinate #Suleimani & now #Fakhrizadeh , does it mean that Lebanon had the right to assassinate Eitan, Dagan & Sharon, who conducted deadly #terrorist bombing campaign in 1980s? If not, why not? See: mondoweiss.net/2018/05/remark…

If Iran sent agents to assassinate the top American (or Israeli) nuclear scientist (& this attack took place on US or Israeli soil) does anyone doubt that this would be immediately described (& condemned) as an act of terrorism? nytimes.com/2020/11/27/wor…
& I'll ask again: if the US or ISR have the right to assassinate #Suleimani & now #Fakhrizadeh , does it mean that Lebanon had the right to assassinate Eitan, Dagan & Sharon, who conducted deadly #terrorist bombing campaign in 1980s? If not, why not? See: mondoweiss.net/2018/05/remark…

bit.ly/37KwcyD shooting missiles from Iranian territory was a MASSIVE blunder. Now the best move for the US is reminding Iraqis of all persuasion that they have a neighbor bent on dominating them. @Halsrethink @amlivemon @vtchakarova @RobertMCutler @BaldingsWorld (/)
That will be obviously loved by Kurds and Sunnis, but the most interested is Shias who don't love Iranian domination. Interesting times indeed. Second takeway is about #Suleimani . (/)
The fact that he hadn't thought about contingency plans in case he was killed, means he was the product of a kamikaze culture. not to be too bright eyed, but Iranians might have been overplayed as geopolitical players, irrespective of correlation of forces.

What to expect for Europe in 2020? As the EU enters a new policy cycle, here’s to a few predictions that I’ve shared with @euronews #THREAD 1/9
The new EU political leadership overpromised by generating outsized expectations that might reveal too difficult to manage:

1. Defend EU interests vs US & China 2. Take the lead on climate change 3. Tackle rebellious EU illiberal democracies 4. Tame big tech 5. Overcome Brexit
1. The #Suleimani assassination is already putting to test the self-proclaimed first EU ‘geopolitical’ Commission, which has lost in few hours the major EU foreign policy legacy of @JunckerEU @FedericaMog : the nuclear deal #JCPOA | the EU will be bystander of #iran situation

Quick takeaway from Tucker’s monologue: It reflects to a large degree how much the institutions the Right once trusted have burned down their own house. The FBI, CIA, ODNI, and yes, parts of the military, have been corrupted perhaps beyond repair. Tucker asked the questions...
many of us wish we had asked over the past 20 years. But we trusted the Bush/McCain neocon alliance—at our own peril. Iraq/Afghan wars have been failures. The Middle East appears no more stable now than a few decades ago. We keep hearing the same threats and same promises...
Tucker may or may not be accurate in the specifics, but his overall view is worth considering. Millions of Republicans feel burned and betrayed by our blind trust in leaders and institutions unworthy of that fealty. We won’t be fooled again. So, thanks, Bill Kristol.

ALERT(s). You know you want this on a Friday night, but with news that @DHSgov is now considering a change to the threat level, let me take you on a little tour of the color code system, the politics of fear, and how we are still so bad at differentiating threats. 1/
I've been critical of analysts and politicians today who can't seem to make distinctions between heightened threats abroad and here, and most Iran experts believe Iran's focus will be in the region or in cyber space. I concur with that. 2/
The color code system no longer exists. We dumped it in Obama Admin. Instead, we put into place a NTAS (National Advisory Terrorism System) which would provide content on risks, recommendations on response, and not be so ridiculed. 3/

#Pentagon statement on targeted killing of #suleimani: 1. It mentions that it aimed at “deterring future Iranian attack plans”. This however is very vague. Future is not the same as imminent which is the time based test required under international law. (1)
2. Overall, the statement places far greater emphasis on past activities and violations allegedly commuted by Suleimani. As such the killing appears far more retaliatory for past acts than anticipatory for imminent self defense.
3. The notion that Suleimani was “actively developing plans” is curious both from a semantic and military standpoint. Is it sufficient to meet the test of mecessity and proportionality?
