#TerminatorWatch. Why has #SunspotCycle25 taken off.......? Well..... the #Terminator has arrived. In this thread we'll show some of the preliminary observations and discuss the implications for our forecast of #SunspotCycle25 strength. Image
@leamonrj @rickyegeland Using small features in the Sun's corona [called "EUV BrightPoints"] we trace the progress of the Sun's magnetic #HaleCycle. Hale Cycles overlap, but come to an abrupt end - #terminator - at the Sun's equator. The #terminator causes the next Sunspot Cycle to blossom. Image
The BrightPoint density for 2021 showed a bald patch of BrightPoints at the Sun's equator that varied a lot over the year - until December 13, 2021. Will show you something cool about the bald patches later. We've been waiting on that big drop. Image

#Terminator Watch...... still crackling.....
last frame.......
the LONGEST low density stretch yet........ [latitude vs time - each slice is a daily histogram]... the naughty longitude seems to finally be fading.

While it's great to see the debate over solar cycle predictions and #SunspotCycle25 feature in the @nytimes it is unfortunate that the story leaves an impression of a lack of consensus/physics-based understanding. Thread 👇🏾1/n
@NYTScience #SpaceWeather #SunspotCycle25
First, the story by @overbye nicely connects understanding Sun's magnetism with exploration of other active stars and #exoplanets, wherein stellar activity influences conditions suitable for hosting life. It describes well how solar storms create #spaceweather impacting us 2/n Image
But there are many issues that are misleading or sometimes simply incorrect. It says "A new cycle of storms will begin any day now". Well, #SolarCycle25 has already begun in late 2019. An early report on this is already published. See 👇🏾3/n
