My mother taught us to ward off the Evil Eye by spitting. 💦

According to this #Syriac #manuscript (Or 6673) there are more hygienic ways of eliminating it, and a host of other ailments, misfortunes and generic evils. Let’s see what they are!

(Props to the Evangelists)

Let’s cut the gentle humour for... one tweet. This #manuscript was copied at the end of the 19th century by Church of the East believers in northern #Iraq. It’s part of a long tradition of prayer and medicine in the region, and it relies on a number of different belief systems.
Ok, first up is fear. St. George was not afraid when he slew the #dragon (also identified here as a Great #Monster), so why should you be? Offer him a prayer to allay distress and fears.

Shamash was the Akkadian name for the #Mesopotamian god of the sun, known to the Sumerians as Utu. His main symbol was the solar disc, a circle with four points in each of the cardinal directions and four wavy, diagonal lines emanating from the circle between each point.
According to "Gods, Demons, and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia" by Jeremy Black and Anthony Green, the Akkadian name for this #symbol was shamshatu. It was often represented on a pole as a standard. The symbol is currently a popular icon among people native to #Mesopotamia.
Chaldean Christians posing with their ethnic flag, a colored shamshatu flanked by 2 parallel blue bands. Though #Chaldean Catholics are mostly regarded ethnically and historically as a part of the #Assyrian continuity, some claim a Chaldean ethnic identity as a nation of its own.

I thought it would be fun to share my own #MICAH13 presentation with you all via Twitter – @PhDniX's excellent Twitter recaps of his talks were a major factor behind me getting on here too. This was a 20-minute talk, so: LONG thread.
This talk is about #Biblical #Aramaic, attested in the books of #Ezra and #Daniel. Scholars have long debated the linguistic background of these texts, nearly always focusing on the consonantal text. But in the case of Biblical Aramaic, that only tells you half the story.
In the Masoretic Text, differences between the consonantal text and the reading tradition are indicated by so-called qere notes. Here, 'what is written' (Aramaic: ketiv) does not match 'what is read' (Aramaic: qere). The different qere forms thus reflect the reading tradition.
