Trump says he’s going to sign an executive order extending added federal unemployment benefits at $400 per week. Dems have been pushing to extend at $600/ week
After months of Republican arguments about added unemployment benefits disincentivizing work, preferring instead a wage replacement formula, Trump signs EO extending it at flat 400 for rest of the year. Wonder if any GOP lawmakers push back ...

6 months to the day that I wrote our lead @TheLancet editorial on a mysterious new pneumonia-like outbreak drafting it in 3 hours instead of the usual 3 days. Colleagues gave input in 1 h instead of 24 h. 6 months for the world to change forever. #writing
thelancet.com/journals/lance…
Writing a leader under those conditions is risky: what was the outbreak & would it spread? Are we making something of nothing? Should we go soft or hard on China’s response & transparency? What about this ‘lockdown’ of Wuhan, an intervention we thought of as draconian (ha ha).
Our EIC edited the leader; we waited overnight for WHO to decide about the PHEIC. New cases from around the world were reported (we couldn't keep up). We had the first 2 research reports from China describing the novel coronavirus.....We were under pressure to go live ASAP.

I won't retweet it, but I'm interested to know what @Olympics and IOC press team thought they were doing sharing footage from the 1936 Berlin Olympics in Nazi Germany w/flippant #TBT hashtag. The footage was mostly from Leni Riefenstahl's propaganda film Olympia. Thoughts🧵1/13
This film must be handled with caution & context. To us, its footage looks unremarkable, but it largely *created* norms about how sports are represented and filmed. Think on that a moment. Our film techniques in sports trace their origins in many ways back to Nazi propaganda. 2/
This is why I teach this film. It shows us continuities between our societies today and the racial ideologies and fascism of Nazism. It should remind us how the racist and heterosexist structures of sport are too often invisible/unremarkable, easily mistaken for common sense. 3/

Ofereci o temaki e ele pegou dizendo "gracias".

It’s #IPThursday Good People! The following thread tells the story of N!xau, the man who starred in “The Gods Must Be Crazy”.

The question to ask yourself is, to what extent should film companies be responsible in improving the lives of their poor and illiterate artists?
Our story this week begins in 1980, at the peak of apartheid. Jacobus “Jamie” Uys (pronounced “Eys”)wanted to make a film that would distract the people from the problems facing SA. His ultimate goal was to make a slapstick comedy based on two worlds colliding.
He decided to tell the story based off the Khoisan people of the Kalahari. His idea was produce a documentary style comedy showing a khoisan interacting with modern civilization for the very first time.

Hey @Tesco I was about to cook my favourite vegetable of all time (broccoli) and after unwrapping it, to my surprise, found caterpillars inside! They’re really nice and we’ve ended up keeping one as a pet and naming him. but just as a heads up, some of your broc has c-pillars😳🐛
In case anyone is interested, the name we’ve gone with is Cedric, he’s from Spain (at least we assume so because the broccoli is) and he dances after eating spinach and broc all day long 🐛🐛🐛
OH MY CHRIST. Just bought another broc and before I’ve even opened it I can see caterpillars 😭🐛

This isn't your fight? Oh.

You couldn't stop posting about the Australian wildfires. You're not Australian.

You posted a #TBT in REAL LIFE TEARS when Notre Dame burned. You're not French.

But justice and equality within your own damn country are not in your lane? Ok.
This is just *too* political for you, huh?

Many would argue that climate change is a political issue but yet you have no problem posting about that and supporting others do the same.

It is so easy to see where you stand.
You're in tears over billion-dollar business being looted, yet you didn't blink an eye at the murder of George Floyd.

People tell on themselves EVERYDAY. And it's wild that they can't even see it.

Just say you don't care about black bodies and go.

Is your computer taking too long to process data? Spare a thought for the team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory back in 1965, waiting for their computers to process the first closeup images of Mars taken by Mariner 4. Their solution - colour by numbers! #tbt #AstronoMay (1/9)
On July 15 1965, Mariner 4 obtained the first closeup images of Mars and stored them in its onboard tape recorder. Over the course of three weeks, the data acquired during the flyby was transmitted back to the Earth. #AstronoMay #MuseumFromHome #sciencefromhome (2/9)
At JPL, a "real-time data translator" machine converted the image data into numbers which were printed onto strips of paper. The team knew the computers would take some time to process the images and they were anxious to see them. Then, they had an idea... #AstronoMay (3/9)

#TBT -- Yesterday I joined Senate Democrats to call on Pres Trump to invoke the #StaffordAct and consider disaster declarations that would free up funding to assist state & local governments in responding to this int’l #coronavirus health crisis. democrats.senate.gov/newsroom/press…
The #StaffordAct is named after the late Robert Stafford, a mentor of mine who was a giant of the Senate and a commanding figure in Vermont. Bob, a Republican, and Helen took Marcelle and me under their wings when I joined the Senate in 1974.
Bob and Helen and Marcelle and I became close friends, and Bob showed me that to do what is best for our country, we must set aside party labels and work together. Bob’s wisdom, calm demeanor, and ability to work across the aisle are sorely lacking in the Senate today.

Oh wow: It looks like @RichardGrenell may have violated FARA while trying to whitewash one of the most corrupt figures the post-Soviet space has ever produced. Wow. propublica.org/article/trumps…
The U.S. recently barred Vlad Plahotniuc from the U.S. on account of grand corruption (worldpoliticsreview.com/articles/28520…). Seriously hard to overstate a more corrupt actor in Moldova, or in Eastern Europe, that @RichardGrenell was helping launder the reputation of.
Plahotniuc had a pretty substantial whitewashing/lobbying machine in his back pocket in DC a few years back... while simultaneously pillaging millions of dollars (or more) from Moldovans. Really heinous stuff.

Last Thursday, I got a fish bone stuck in my throat. A day later, I had developed a headache, my ear hurt and my throat was sore; I was very uncomfortable. By Saturday, it became unbearable so I decided to go see an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist.
When I arrived at the hospital, I told the lady at the front desk it was an emergency. I let her know what the problem was and she immediately arranged for me to see the doctor as soon as he became available.

I decided to use the wait time to respond to some emails.
Some minutes in, a nurse came to call me, I asked her to please bear with me for a minute or two as I was almost done with my response to an email.

I hadn’t typed two more words when I heard the doctor’s loud voice, “how can she say she has an emergency but she’s on the phone...

Last month, I made a decision on a proposal that was brought before me. It was enticing and looked like it would work. Even the numbers, market survey, research, they all made sense.

Still, I declined to get involved because it just didn't "FEEL" right.

#Thread
Other smart investors I knew personally were involved, so this should have given me some consolation but it didn’t. My instinct was aggressively against investing so I declined and left the meeting.

I was worried if I stayed longer, the numbers would entice me.
I am a deeply emotional being. I feed off people’s energy and my intuition. This makes me ask first, "how do you feel about this?" Instead of "what do you think about this?"

I see the sadness in people's eyes when others see a bubbly persona. I hear emotions, not words.

The release of the Model T in 1908—the same year as the #FBI's founding—ushered in a new era of reliable, affordable transportation for the American people, but it also launched a new wave of crime. As car sales exploded, so did automobile thefts. #TBT ow.ly/xgNi50wYxDF
In 1919, Congress passed the Dyer Act, which made transporting stolen automobiles across state lines a federal crime. The law was a vital tool in fighting crime and protecting communities not just for state and local police but also for the #FBI. #TBT

📷 by @smithsonian
In the first two decades of the Dyer Act, the #FBI recovered more than 56,000 vehicles valued at $32 million. The law was integral to the FBI's work in the 1930s because it gave us the jurisdiction to join the hunt for notorious gangsters such as Bonnie and Clyde. #TBT
