NEW from me @TheSpectator:

It's clear that legislation from #SC03's @RepJeffDuncan, #KY02's @RepGuthrie, #AZ09's @RepGosar, and #KY01's @RepJamesComer just forced the Biden admin's hand in a VERY big way.

Let's see what went down this week...

thespectator.com/topic/inside-r…

(1/xx)
The @HouseGOP launched an all-out war on the remaining Covid vaccine mandates being enforced by the Biden administration. So far they have won some important concessions, but are pushing for more.

(2/xx)
I talked with several key players involved in the legislative battle, which they claim forced the Biden admin to finally declare an end to some of its coronavirus emergency powers later this year. @HouseGOP, however, wants them shut down now.

NEW FROM ME: I went district by district, and I agree with @databyler: Redistricting probably didn't cost Democrats the House. fivethirtyeight.com/features/redis…
There were 11 districts that Republicans flipped thanks to redistricting alone (including #FL04, #TN05, etc.), vs. 5 that Democrats did. (Chart by @elena___mejia!) That's a net gain of +6 for the GOP. BUT… fivethirtyeight.com/features/redis… Image
…there were 9 districts Democrats *kept* only because of redistricting, vs. only 3 for Republicans. So it was a wash! fivethirtyeight.com/features/redis… Image

So, here's how redistricting and, in some cases, gerrymandering, helped the Republicans take the House:

Again, Republicans had full control over redistricting in 17 states (AL, AR, FL, GA, IN, KS, KY, MS, MO, NE, NH, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX and WV).
Democrats had full control over redistricting in 7 states (IL, MD, MA, NV, NM, OR and RI).

There were 3 states in which an Independent Commission drew the lines but Republicans could override them (IA, OH and UT).
And there was 1 state in which an Independent Commission drew the lines but Democrats could override them (NY).

Because of the 2020 Census, CA, IL, MI, NY, OH, PA and WV all lost House seats.

2022 #Midterms Simulation: #ArtoftheGerrymander

A Republican House win will be built on gerrymanders (TX/GA/FL/TN/LA, etc.)

To illustrate the need for fair maps, I'm calculating the results using the 2022 votes, but if every state had a Democratic gerrymander. #ElectionTwitter ImageImageImageImage
Methodology:

I’ll apply the difference in Presidential margin to the House result. Thanks @davesredist @mikemathieu @vest_team + @DKElections @PoliticsWolf

Keen to see how my maps perform over the decade; tried to comply with state law if partisan intent were allowed to stand.
#ArtoftheGerrymander: #Alabama
Trump 62.0% - Biden 36.6%
Real delegation: 6R-1D
Gerrymandered: 5R-2D
Δ Share of D seats: 14% => 28%
Easy Democratic pick-up of a safe new African American seat.

Breaking: per two TN sources, Republicans are proceeding w/ drafting a redistricting plan that would carve up Nashville, likely dooming #TN05 Rep. Jim Cooper (D) and converting current 7R-2D map into 8R-1D.
Although an initial draft isn't yet public, our Tennessee analysis from August highlighted how Republicans could flip #TN05 from a Biden +23 to a Trump +20 district by adding Williamson & other counties- while surrounding GOP seats would remain Trump +25 or more.
To be clear, there is nothing final about this approach - and I've also heard from TN GOP operatives who are leery slicing up Nashville could backfire later in the decade and don't think it'll ultimately happen. We'll see.

Speaker's election underway. Conducted aloud on House floor, alphabetically by member-elect surname.

Winner needs majority of members-elect voting for a candidate by surname. Can win with fewer than 218.

Pelosi, McCarthy formally nominated, but members-elect can vote for anyone
Blue Dog Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) voted for Pelosi for speaker for the 1st time since 2009.

Cooper voted "present" in 2019 and for Tim Ryan in 2017, Colin Powell in both 2015 elections and in 2013, and Heath Shuler in 2011. #tn05
Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), who voted for Tammy Duckworth for speaker as a freshman in 2019, voted for Pelosi after an easy re-election win in #co06

🗳️It’s primary day in Tennessee! We’re proud to have endorsed two progressive champions in the state: @KeedaHaynes (TN-05) and @RVHoyos (TN-02). #GoVoteTN
As a public defender, @KeedaHaynes advocated passionately on behalf of her clients — standing up for them in the face of a racist system.

We’ve endorsed #KeedaforCongress for #TN05 because we know she will take that same level of passion and determination to Washington. Image
We’re proud to have endorsed @RVHoyos because she will stand up to powerful special interests and wealthy insiders to fight for working families and deliver real results for East Tennessee.

Vote for Renee in #TN02! Image

Voting in the Volunteer State today: Tennessee holds primaries for House and Senate seats.
There's an open #TNSen seat race with 3rd term Republican Senator Lamar Alexander not running for reelection. 15 Republicans including former Trump US Amb to Japan Bill Hagerty and Dr. Manny Sethi and 5 Democrats including Nashville atty James Mackler are running to succeed him.
6th term #TN01 Republican Rep. Phil Roe, ranking member & former chair of House VA Cmte, is not running for reelection. 16 Republicans are running to succeed him in northeastern Tennessee House seat which GOP has held since 1881. Winner will likely face Democrat Blair Walsingham.

Tested it out with this new KY map. Based on 2016-2019 results, intrigued how it would do in 2020. The #KY04 (R+7 PVI) seems more competitive than the real #KY06 (R+9), with the movement in the Cincinnati and Lexington suburbs. 2/27 davesredistricting.org/join/d389d8e2-…
However, I also did a bunch of Democratic gerrymanders after 2012 redistricting to compare with the real Republican ones. Thought I’d review how my designs performed in light of 2016. The contrast shows just how much of a difference partisan control makes (spoiler: a lot). 3/27
