In the Tokushima and Miyazaki prefectures, bird flu has been identified at chicken farms, leading to the killing of tens of thousands of chickens as the outbreak continues to spread in the region, local governments said Saturday.
The H5 strain, which has yet to be verified as a highly pathogenic type, was first identified at a farm in Tokushima, making it the 12th prefecture this year to record an outbreak of bird flu.
Initially, the farm in Awa, Tokushima, which borders Kagawa Prefecture, where the year's first case of flu was reported, intended to kill 10,000 chickens but ended up killing around 8,000.
