BIG ONE: NPA boss, Shamila Batohi tells journalists at a roundtable discussion in Pretoria that her office is now paying special attention to old #TRC cases, and that they're even considering bringing "crimes against humanity" charges against #apartheid perpetrators.

@etvNewsSA See my TL for those wondering about #statecapture, thanks.
@etvNewsSA For those wondering WHY state capturists aren't in orange overalls yet?

Today NPA boss Shamila Batohi told reporters in Pretoria: "all of the revelations in the Zondo Commission were in the Hawks space prior to the (NPA's new) Investigative Directorate being formed"

Decolonizing your syllabus is different than including some Indigenous writers in the schedule. A thread.

Inclusion is a form of diversification but it can also be violent. Inviting voices into spaces not built for them can often work against the well-intentioned goals of inclusion. This is what is meant by tokenism where inclusion = sufficient action, but no structures change.
Also, colonialism is about settler/colonials gaining access to Indigenous land, knowledge, cultuare, etc, & mere inclusion of Indigenous writers, obtaining and "integrating" ideas to enrich settler education can be a form of colonialism. Probably not your goal! So what to do?

Congratulations to my old @LawMcGill dean, Nicholas Kasirer, on his nomination to the #SupremeCourt. I am confident he will be a compassionate, discerning & rigorous justice.

That being said...

@LawMcGill Let's meditate for a moment on the colonial structure of the Court, which is concerned with representation insofar as it aims at equity between Canada's two founding colonial powers, languages and legal traditions:
@LawMcGill The Supreme Court Act requires that 3/9 justices come from Québec. The official languages of the Court are English and French, and all justices are required to be functionally bilingual in both of Canada's colonial languages.

1. I was not expecting this to be so widely shared & requested.

Folks wanted this in a non-fb format - a Treaty Acknowledgement I gave this week in Urban Planning Committee.

It is very brief and therefore imperfect but maybe it helps.

So the racist pieces of shit who did this are our Kamloops neighbours. Now what? #TRC #TruthBeforeReconciliation 1/
I heard @tult7 on CBC condemning this as “small minded hate crime”, saying he hopes this racism isn’t representative of Kamloops.

I don’t know if I can be as generous as Kukpi7 Ignace. The racism is real and everyday and ingrained. In Kamloops, and the rest of Canada too. 2/
I talk to community & business groups, educators & bureaucrats abt Indigenous history/rights/ all the time. It’s an *understatement* to say people are ignorant of Indigenous issues.

It’s better characterized as flat out denial. A preference for ignorance. And it fuels racism. 3/
