1/ I talk a lot about the cooling effects of street trees and green infrastructure during heatwaves, but one of the best ways of mitigating against high daytime temperatures is reducing high nighttime temperatures.

2/ Concrete, tarmac, and other hard and synthetic materials - think the astroturf pitch (car tyre dump) or plastic play surfacing your Council recently installed - accumulate heat throughout the day and do not begin to release it until the external temperature begins to fall.
3/ Hard, man-made surfaces therefore turn cities into giant storage heaters, and this has a magnifying effect on the follow day's temperatures. Many studies have explained this effect, which can alter local nighttime temps by 17-25% (Ibsen et al, 2022).

We use #MachineLearning to identify the key factors in predicting the use of @bicing (the bike-sharing system in Barcelona) before and during #COVID using bicing trips and #OpenData from @bcn_ajuntament and @govern @iopendatabcn. Main insights👇
1. Increasing bike-related built infrastructure, trip distance, and the income levels of neighborhoods are the most relevant predictors of the increase in bicing usage.

What if I told you there was a single intervention we could deliver in our cities that would cool them during heatwaves, reduce flooding, scrub pollutants from the air, boost biodiversity, improve public health, and even reduce crime? You wouldn't believe me. But it's true.
What if I told you one study in Manchester found that shade from street trees reduced surface temperatures by an average of 12°C and that concrete surfaces shaded permanently by a bank of trees were cooled by up to 20°C in the summer? You wouldn't believe me. But it's true.
What if I told you that a single young tree planted in a small pit over an impermeable asphalt surface can reduce rain runoff by around 60%, even during winter when not in leaf? You wouldn't believe me, but it's true.

The #TacticalUrbanism community of practice has grown by leaps + bounds since we first published our book in 2015. So, quick poll: How many people would be interested in reading a revised, updated second edition of our book with 5 years worth of new data, best practices, + info?

.@StreetPlans has always been a free resource-first, mission driven firm but we wonder how useful our tools are in digital form alone, so your feedback is useful as we consider what's next in helping cities + citizens launch short-term projects that catalyze long-term change.
Back to NYC - thanks to @sotonobaplace for such an inspiring week exploring #tacticalurbanism, #placemaking in Japan. Here are some thoughts from my time here, with recognition that one week is hardly the time required to understand a city as complex as Tokyo.
I was utterly surprised at how little congestion there is in Tokyo. The transit system, walking, and cycling really ease the pressure on the arterial street network. Speaking of which, we felt such streets are largely overbuilt and should be given back to other uses.
The city has a 15% cycling mode share with almost zero bike infrastructure. What? I think this is largely due to the stark contrast in the city’s street network. Once off the car sewers most streets are narrow, slow, and shared. Additionally, people are allowed to sidewalk ride.
