Today I visited the #TamarackFire burn scar, where @NvDOW and @NevDCNR’s Division of Forestry are working to restore over 8,000 acres with plants, trees & flowers that benefit wildlife and are more resilient to the impacts of climate change, drought, and wildfire.
This is truly impressive work. I had the opportunity to ride-along as agencies used an NDF helicopter to spread 71,400 pounds of wildfire-resilient seedlings across the landscape from the air!
Without taking strategic action to restore and re-seed the area with fire-resilient plants and trees, much of the landscape would likely convert to cheatgrass, making the area even more susceptible to annual catastrophic wildfire in the future.

This week, USFS chief Moore suspended Managed Wildfire and Prescribed Fire and pushed to suppress all fires quickly. Here's why that's a horrible decision that only exacerbates the wildfire problem. 🧵1/ n wildfiretoday.com/2021/08/03/for…
1) It puts firefighter lives at risk. Wilderness fires are some of the most difficult and dangerous to fight bc you can't use motorized equipment, the terrain is incredibly challenging, and it's very difficult to get in and out. Escape routes are limited if things blow up. 2/n
2) It can pull valuable air resources away from more dangerous WUI fires. Air resources (especially helicopters) are used to ferry firefighters, drop supplies, and drop water on wilderness fires, which 99% of the time threaten no one and no homes. 3/n

We have to talk about journalistic malfeasance that I’ve come across covering the #TamarackFire. Some abhorrent behavior being relayed to me.
Law enforcement telling me today a TV crew was in the way of an airdrop and prevented it from happening. And I witnessed a Photog get far too close to a firefighter working the containment line. He had to be yelled at. Shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place.
Earlier this week, the manager of one of the evacuation centers told me a reporter asked to use the restroom and was strictly told no cameras inside. Turns out he lied and took some photos of evacuees sleeping in their cots.
