Pediatrician here. The acquittal of #KyleRittenhouse exemplifies all the ways America is messing up teen boys & perpetuating gun culture, while meanwhile terrorizing youth of color. 🧵1/
I’m a doc for plenty of 17-year-olds and, like everyone else, can’t help but notice that Rittenhouse got a pass for murder while #TamirRice & #TrayvonMartin & countless other teen boys of color (often much younger) are killed (often by police) in the absence of a crime. 2/
Every last one of these kids is a son, brother, grandkid, who is violently robbed of a future and whose families will struggle with grief and trauma for the rest of their lives. 3/

1/ Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams, when he was commander of my district, always struck me as a decent, smart fellow and straight shooter. Somehow, he lost track of the true meaning of public service along the way.
2/ He was disrespectful to and disdainful of bona fide victims of police misconduct. He refused to freely provide information to victims, including Samaria Rice, mother of #TamirRice—we had to resort to public-records request.
3/ He was dilatory about holding officers accountable and let serious, even racist misconduct slide. Example. Officers Brian Kazimer and Dan Crisan. In Aug. 2010, the officers brutalized a 16-year-old Latino child with Down Syndrome. thefreethoughtproject.com/racist-cops-as…

No one asked for this, but I've been thinking a lot about #abolition and #abolishthepolice for some time now. And if I may, I'd like to share my novice perspective, albeit one rooted in my own (anti-)philosophical stance. So here goes.
I'm not convinced that the #abolitionist movement--which I wholly agree with--is an oppositional movement. Philosophically, a call for abolition is not a call to opposition. This distinction, in my mind anyway, is crucial. I'll elaborate.
Hegel told us long ago that oppositional realities (or what he calls dialectics) form a totality in themselves. Think about a fight: if one person chooses not to fight, there is no fight at all--only violence on the part of the aggressor.

I don’t normally disagree with @FrankFigliuzzi1 but today, I must.

It has ALWAYS been about white supremacy.

None of the previous white, male, homegrown terrorists have been just troubled souls.

They are not little lost boys or lone wolves.

They are radicalized terrorists.
This narrative that being troubled or poor is an excuse for murder or criminality is only extended to white men.

Black boys playing on playgrounds like #TamirRice are gunned down at 12.

Double murderers like #KyleRittenhouse are called heroes at 17.

#Nope #NopittyNope
I am not coming for @FrankFigliuzzi1. He’s a good dude. I like him.

But this skewed narrative that white supremacy and the mayhem, chaos and sadly death it causes being something just a few misguided lone wolves live by is not true or fair to their MANY victims.

Speaking at #AAP2020 Rev @CornellWBrooks starts by illustrating that #EmmettTill #TamirRice & #GeorgeFloyd are the recognized victims of police violence but that the trauma of over overpolicing is felt by whole communities & generations of children.
.@AmerAcadPeds section on Minority Health Equity & Inclusion Chair @DrHeardGarris has described this even more broadly as “vicarious racism”

Similar to secondhand smoke, vicarious racism has real impacts on child health

Pediatricians have a place to help frame the story around racism & police violence’s impact on child health. @CornellWBrooks cites the impact pediatric providers had on the Supreme Court’s Brown v Board of Education decision.

Criminal charges in U.S. police killings are rare. 110 nonfederal police officers have been charged with murder or manslaughter for shooting someone on duty since 2005, reports @washingtonpost.

Police have shot and killed at least 5,400 people since 2015.

Tamir Rice. Born on this day, June 25, 2002.

On November 22, 2014, Tamir Rice was throwing snowballs and playing with a toy pellet gun in a Cleveland park when a police car rolled into the snowy field. Within two seconds of getting out of his squad car, white police officer
white police officer Timothy Loehmann shot and killed the 12-year-old. The officer claimed he thought the pellet gun was a real firearm.
America’s systemic marginalization, criminalization and subordination of black and brown bodies killed Tamir, the officer merely fired the gun.

Tamir Rice should be alive today, turning 18 years old, and graduating from high school. He was an innocent 12-year-old who was playing in a park near his home when he was shot by a Cleveland police officer.
The person who called the police told the dispatcher that Tamir was probably a juvenile and the gun was probably fake. The dispatcher did not relay this information to the responding officers.

Philando Castile told Officer Jeronimo Yanez that he was licensed and carrying a registered handgun. He was shot seven times. The 4-year old girl in the backseat pleaded with her mother Diamond Reynolds to stop screaming. “Mama I don’t want you to get shooted.” Philando was 32.
Breonna Taylor was in her home when officers burst through her door on a no-knock warrant with a battering ram seeking two suspects already in police custody. She was shot eight times. Breonna was 26.

I'm tellin' you man, black folks, black Muslims, Arabs, Desis, Mexicans, etc., are out in the streets dancing to a tune so loud, they don't even know what key it's in. Because of this, many are unwilling and unable to acknowledge the main reason why
the death of #GeorgeFloyd has gone global, has gone viral, is because Chuck authorized it to go viral. The liberal wing of Chuck has authorized outrage over the death of a black man even though we've been dying at the hands of white cops and black hoodlums for decades!
The question I have is why did not white liberals authorize riots and protests when they killed #CliffordGlover, #ClaudeReese, #RandyEvans, #YvonneSmallwood, #AmadouDiallo, #SeanBell, #OscarGrant, #TrayvonMartin, #JordanDavis, #JonathanFerrell, #AiyanaJones,

#BlackLivesMatter. #GeorgeFloyd's life mattered. #AhmaudAubrey's life mattered. #TamirRice's life mattered. #MichaelBrown's life mattered.

White people, we need to stop turning blind eyes to this, stop pretending that it's "bad apples" in the police.
We need to stand with our black friends, neighbours, colleagues, coworkers, classmates, and yes, even strangers.

But we also need to make a conscious decision to not make this about us. It's not about us. This about the countless black lives that have been cut short.
It's about acknowledging that we owe black people the dignity to control their movement. That we, as a privileged people, owe it to them to amplify their voices without distorting them. And that we show up for them, every time.

On May 25, #GeorgeFloyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was murdered by Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer. Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck for seven minutes, suffocating him as Floyd pleaded repeatedly that he couldn’t breathe. Justice has not yet been achieved.
We have a national crisis of white supremacist violence against Black people in the USA. In the past decade alone, we witnessed the deaths of thousands of Black people at the hands of police. #BreonnaTaylor #EricGarner #SandraBland #TamirRice are just some of those we’ve lost.
At Indivisible, we believe Black Lives Matter without qualifications, asterisks, or add-ons. We also believe in the right for communities to protest and protect themselves against state-sanctioned violence. Period.

I'm seeing a lot of white friends post about a desire to learn more about racism but many are unsure where to begin. We can't bring back #GeorgeFloyd but we can learn how to be anti-racists and teach kids how to, too. #sschat #EduColor @Spencer_Fdn @BeaconPressBks @Tolerance_org
